The four divers stood ready to go out. Gwen looked at them still worried. "You two better come back alive... Shoot a blinding flame into the air if you need help."
Faust nodded.
Each and every diver got in their positions, waiting beside the massive door standing as the only obstacle between them and the monsters who wanted nothing more than to claim their lives.
Colt spoke up, standing in the middle of the crowd. "Everyone stand ready... Operation Lightpath will now commence! Ready... Set... ...And open the gates! FORWARD!!"
The massive doors swung open, hundreds of divers flowing out to fight the monsters with all they have.
Colt found the thresher he wanted slightly to the side. He took his spear, stabbing at it to get it's attention. "Hey, ugly!"
The thresher started biting at him, to which Colt backed up. Just as the thresher started to follow him, a king thresher dug itself out of the ground behind it. Colt was terrified looking at it approach him, until Gwen took her katana, jumping between the thresher and the king thresher, slicing a clean cut into the face of the king thresher.
Colt focused, occasionally stabbing at the thresher to keep it on himself. A megalodaunt would try to shoot at him from the side, but the journeyman who gave everyone food jumped in, holding a large shield to block it. "Don't stop! Not yet...!"
Colt looked at him for a moment. "You..." He nodded, as the thresher finally went underground. "Got it! Thank you!"
He turned around and started to run as the thresher dug underground at massive speeds. People fell in battle before his eyes, but they all screamed and fought until their very last seconds. Despite what he would've done before, Colt didn't think about it.
He only had one goal in mind: Complete Operation Lightpath.
Finally once Colt got past the first door, he held up his arm, letting a lightning strike his palm. That was the sign to start retreating. Everyone started to run back, Colt essentially leading both the charges outward and inward. Some people had to stay outside, but most crossed the doors just as they were shut in the faces of the monsters.
Colt finally reached the deepest room, standing still. The thresher jumped out from beneath him, knocking him into the air.
Tens of divers awaited it in a circle. Colt let out a yelp of pain before screaming out as loud as he could. "FIRE!!"
And right on command, they did fire. With everything they had, rifles, Thundercall, Galebreathe, Flamecharm, Frostdraw, everything.
The thresher fell down onto the floor, breathing it's last breath just as Colt hit the ground. The divers looked to each other. Did they do it? How many casualties were there?
Colt stumbled up. "Operation Lightpath..." He closed his eyes, doing a salute. "Is a success!"
Everyone once again cheered, hugging each other. Gwen ran up to Colt, hugging him tightly. "I knew you could do it!" She said happily.
Colt blushed a little. "T-thanks, ehheh..."
Faust and Pakki walked up to their friends as Gwen let go.
Gwen thought for a moment before pulling them up onto a small podium. "Hey, these two have some stuff to say."
Faust took a step back. "Aye, I didn't agree to that.."
Pakki retreated a little as well. "I'm not good at public speeches y'know--"
Gwen interrupted him. "These two are gonna go outside and get help! Place your spirits in them, for your sacrifices were for them! Faust and Pakki!"
She yelled as she pushed Pakki, who was still protesting it, to the front. "Don't you-- god damn it... I.. My name's Patrick Jaeger, though my friends call me Pakki and..."
He took a deep breath. "...I was born down here. Along with Faust. I'm going to promise you something - I'll go further! I'll get us help and once we re-establish Castle Light..." He gripped his red gem necklace. "I'm going to leave. To the overworld. I've lived all my life down here... I'll leave and get you all tools and techniques that you can use to conquer the depths! You won't have to live in fear any longer! Threshers won't be anything more than foxes to farmers! I promise...."
He finished his speech, looking at the crowd who were unsure of what to think."Faust Ytreshi and Patrick Jaeger.... Mark my words, we'll save you all!"
He stepped down, Faust and Gwen following him soon after as they rejoined Colt, who was standing beside the tunnel the thresher made. "Please be careful you two..."
Faust smirked. "Don't worry. I'm awesome."
Pakki smiled at him. "I'll come back no matter what!"
Gwen hugged them both for a moment. "You guys can do it... I believe in you."
Having said their goodbyes, Faust and Pakki jumped into the tunnel. They crawled in complete darkness for what seemed like hours.
Just as they were starting to doubt the plan, they saw the light at the end of the tunnel, crawling out.
Faust looked at the monsters near the doors. "Hah, they accidentally baited the monsters to the doors when they escaped back inside... If they didn't there'd probably be a few around here."
Pakki smiled. "No... I think Colt planned it that way. But he didn't want to tell them so they wouldn't get completely discouraged."
Faust shrugged. "Maybe..."
With that, they set out to find a black diver out in the wastes they had only dreamed of visiting so far.
