Ango and Oda seemed surprised when Dazai told them.
"Europe? For a school trip?" Ango had asked, looking a bit uneasy. They both knew what happened there back in Dazai's childhood, and while they didn't wish to stop him, Oda had had a very specific request.
"Don't forget to call us ok? Tell us what it's like there." Oda said, smiling a bit as he ruffled Dazai's hair, and Dazai playfully rolled his eyes and shook his hand off.
"Of course I'll call you. The time difference could make it hard but well- I'll try." He said, and Ango had agreed to at least 1 call in 2 days. They also looked surprised when Dazai told them the number of people who were going. "That many? I've only ever heard Nakahara's name, along with Fyodor, Nikolai and Sigma." Oda said, as he listened to Dazai talk about his various classmates.
It felt nice. Different. Dazai didn't plan to socialize that much here, but it seemed like his plan wasn't really working. He'd gotten attached to the small group of friends he had, minus Fyodor of course. That dude could live in the gutter with the rats for all Dazai cared.
"And this Chibi you talk of you, that's Nakahara right? The one you helped in the exam?" Ango asked, as Dazai perked up at the mention of the red head. He told them a few more things about him, not noticing the glances that Oda and Ango exchanged.
Dazai wasn't even particularly nervous about the exam results. He knew he'd pass. He also knew Chuuya would pass. Dazai had enough confidence in his teaching abilities to make sure that he knew his Chibi was passing.
Chuuya, on the other hand, looked a nervous shipwreck. He was constantly fidgeting, and Dazai wondered how he was the star of the basketball team. Chuuya seemed like crap at handling stress. Or maybe it was because of the studying. No one wanted to get left out, obviously.
Dazai decided to distract Chuuya from the nerves, and started a conversation about a new game that'd just been released a few weeks ago. Dazai was about to play it when Chuuya challenged him to a match.
Chuuya grinned, a small satisfactory feeling settling comfortably in his bones. He's beaten Dazai in that game twice, and it was enough to make Dazai pout. "That's unfair. Chibi had an advantage." He said, whining about his loss. "Don't be such a sore loser." Chuuya laughed, feeling a bit better.
He sipped on his tea, that Ane-san had left for him, while Dazai challenged him to another match. "Whichever one loses has to be the other's dog for the rest of our lives." Dazai said, smirking as he looked at Chuuya.
Chuuya raised his eyebrows at the statement, but he'd never been one to back away from a challenge. And he wasn't going to start now.
He should've walked away.
It had become painfully obvious that Dazai had been hiding his true genius as he beat Chuuya at the game, almost effortlessly. "What the- That's not fucking fair!" Chuuya said, as the 'you lost' sign flashed on his phone.
"I'm afraid it is, Doggy. Now, get me a cup of whatever drink you have. Not tea." Dazai said, laughing at Chuuya and kicking his feet on the table.
"Get your fucking feet off my table. And call me dog again and I'll bite you." Chuuya threatened as he chucked a pillow at Dazai. Dazai yelped while he ducked, throwing a pillow at Chuuya. Chuuya smirked as he dodged and nailed a pillow right at Dazai's face. His laughter bounced off the walls, as they ran around the room, like kids having a pillow a fight.
After 15 mins, after they were exhausted, Chuuya went outside the room because Ane-san called him, and Dazai checked his phone. He had a couple hundred texts as the results for the mid-terms had come. Dazai had attempted to distract Chuuya from his anticipation, and they hadn't even noticed their phones going off.
Dazai opened the list, not bothering to look at the top names, which were Dazai and Fyodor, Kunikida, Gin- ect.
Dazai scrolled until he found who he was looking for, his heart somewhat unusually loud in his ears.
Chuuya Nakahara- 82.4%
Dazai stared at the name. He'd expected a good grade. But not this good. Chuuya hadn't even been close to failing. He'd been amazing and Dazai in fact felt a little lightheaded.
Chuuya returned to the room with popcorn in his hands, and he looked at Dazai. "Why're you smiling so creepily at your phone?" He asked as he set down the popcorn, munching on it.
"The list came out." Dazai said simply and Chuuya's eyes widened. They stared at each other a moment.
"How much were you expecting?" Dazai asked, carefully keeping his voice neutral, not letting away even a bit of happiness.
"Uh- I mean like- uhm 65%?" Chuuya asked, nervousness clear in his voice. 'Oh god what if i failed and now Dazai hates me because he wasted so much time and I won't get to play basketball and I'm not going to Europe and my life is a waste I should've studied harder I should've not slept during that night I should've studied more-' Chuuya''s hands were clammy and his face looked as if he was spiraling.
"Well." Dazai said. "You are way off." He said, and Chuuya's face fell. He failed, hadn't he?
"You got 82%." Dazai said casually, just tossing the statement out there. Chuuya blinked.
And blinked again. And stared at Dazai a bit more. He- He got- he got 82%? Him? Really-
"What?" Chuuya said as he rushed forward and grabbed the phone from Dazai's hands, looking at the little glass screen with disbelief. He got 82%. He got fucking 82%! HE DIDN'T FAIL HE PASSED WITH 82%-
Chuuya let out a bit of a hysteric laugh, and put his hand to his mouth. "I- I passed. Dazai I fucking PASSED I PASSED WE'RE GOING TO GO TO EUROPE." Chuuya yelled, jumping up and down, impulsively holding Dazai's hand and dragging his along too.
Not like Dazai seemed to mind. He laughed as he let Chuuya drag him along his room, still laughing with disbelief as they danced around the place.
And finally, Chuuya pulled him closer. A hug.
Dazai froze. It's not like he hadn't hugged anyone. It's just- It's been a while since he hugged someone other than Oda and Ango. His body awkwardly tried to pat Chuuya on the head, who let out a soft laugh.
And then he froze too. And practically bounced away from Dazai.
"Uh- sorry. And uh-" Chuuya hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. He should say thank you now, Right? He should. He will. Just-
"Aw~ Is my little doggie going to tell me he loves me?" Dazai cooed from his spot, and Chuuya rolled his eyes. "As if, you stinky Mackerel." His eyes were still shinning. And something about that sent Dazai's heart into dangerous territory.
He was pretty sure heart's weren't supposed to be beating this fast.
They were thankfully, interrupted by a call from Tachihara. Chuuya picked it up, laughing at whatever the other one had said, and telling him about the marks.
They decided to get together for a short while, in celebration of all of them passing (mainly Chuuya) and also going to Europe. Chuuya had asked Ane-san after his exams, and while she had been a bit hesitant at first- she allowed him. His actual guardian was also in Europe, so his sister's sign would have to do, and Chuuya was actually excited about this trip.
He'd not been to Europe for such a long time, and it seemed like going home after a long time. He smiled into his drink while Kaji talked about something that Chuuya didn't fucking listen to. He was tuning everyone out, lost in his own thoughts.
Nobody seemed to mind thought. They were all happy and excitement was in the air. The trip was scheduled for 2 weeks, and they were going to travel a lot, and while Chuuya disliked buses, it was going to be amazing.
Let's hope he didn't Jinx anything.
