Squidward immediately slammed the door shut when he saw Sponge's face. A reflex, probably, as he was always showing up out of the blue to traumatize him. This was undoubtedly one of those times as well.

But SpongeBob was relentless; he always got what he wanted. He knocked again, "Squidwardddddd!!!" He said enthusiastically.

"Barnacles, SpongeBob, go away," he groaned, annoyed. But after the banging on the wall continued, the only way to put his ears at ease was to open the door.

He sighed again, meeting a sponge who wore a fat smile on his face. "Are you ready to walk to work together, Squidward?" Spongebob kept smiling, which only was more frustrating for Squidward.

"I'll say it again just like I do every single day, kelp-for-brains, I'm walking alone." His nasally voice reverberated through Spongebob's ears. He was upset. Every day his actions of love were rejected cold heartedly by his squid. He would remember this. But for now...

He squished right past Squidward and bolted in the house, giving the squid no time to object. SpongeBob started walking around the house, examining things he came across.

"This picture is crooked, Squidward!" He walked towards the painting that had just fallen minutes ago and straightened it out. "There, much better," he said, still staring at the picture, "You...you should be more careful next time."

Squidward thought he saw someone there- almost like a different person behind those eyes, but any thoughts crossing his mind were interrupted as the stare was wiped off Spongebob's face and was replaced with his typical annoying smile. His eye twitched.

Something feels a bit strange...why is he-

Spongebob ran towards Squidward, grabbing his wrist and rushing out the door. Shutting the door loudly behind him, he smiled as he got what he wanted once again: they were walking to work together!

Spongebob's hold on Squid's wrist remained for a good amount of the walk to work, until Squidward threatened to quit and just go home, when his grasp released instantly.

They walled the whole way together, Squidward occasionally trying to speed up and avoid walking by Spongebob's side. Obviously, Spongebob did not like that.

He laughed and continued his pursuit as they arrived. As they entered, Mr Krabs greeted them both. "Rise and shine, boys. Today be a day of wealth, I can smell it," he sniffed the air and let out a sigh, walking to the door to flip the CLOSED sign to OPEN.

Squidward scoffed, already preparing himself for his nap, but Spongebob's cold eyes glued to Mr Krabs as he moved around the Krusty Krab. He must have noticed this as he approached him, "You alright, boy?" Mr Krabs placed a heavy claw on his shoulder, "You don't look too good."

A fake smile slid on Spongebob's face in attempt to put Mr Krabs at ease a bit. He knew he didn't actually care. He only cared about Squidward. But no one cared for Squidward the way Spongebob did, and one day, he'd show them all.

But not yet. He walked past Squidward as his heart fluttered and entered the kitchen, meeting his grill and his beloved Fifi. "Today's a big day," he whispered to the spatula in his hands. "Why of course! Everything is ready," he chuckled as a twisted grin rose on his face. "I've been waiting for this day for a long, long time. Nothing will stand in my way."

The day went on like usual, Spongebob flipped the patties while Squidward took the orders. The perfect duo, if you were to ask Spongebob. But eventually, time shriveled down to its last minutes of bustling customer service.

"Spongebob, come here," Squidward groaned as he walked into the kitchen. No customers were inside at the moment, and since they were working the night shift tonight, they didn't expect any more.

Spongebob sprinted to meet Squidward at his command. He would do anything for him. "Yes?" He said as calmly as he could, "What is it?" His smile was so wide he thought his cheeks were ripping. Whatever the feeling, he loved it. Perhaps this was it; the moment Squidward finally realized his feelings and wanted to confess. So cute. He thought his heart might just burst.

"Trash. Take it out."

And it did. His heart felt as if it was ripped from his chest.

But it didn't matter. After all, he would come around eventually. A little detour like this wouldn't dare throw off his plans.

"Alright, can do, Squidward!" He grabbed the bag and skipped to the door singing a tune that nagged Squid's ears. "Takin' out the trash~ Takin' out the trash~ at night!"

...

Spongebob stopped at the door, "You mean, outside?"

Squidward rolled his eyes, "That's where the dumpster is, yes." But Sponge only put his face on the glass, "I dunno, Squidward...It's kinda dark out there..."

"But I thought you liked the night shift?" Squid said with a grin.

"I-I do, I just...Could you come with me?" He begged, but was only met with a blank stare.

"Are you...scared?" Squidward laughed to himself as he held his stomach. This was too funny, it was only dark outside. Yes, it was hard to see anything out there, but that's no reason to piss your pants about it.

Spongebob chewed on his fingers, "No!" But Squid's laughter was ringing in his ears. "Maybe!" Little did he know, things were playing out exactly as they should. Soon...soon everything would be okay in the world. "Yes..." He finally admitted.

Squidward scoffed, still laughing, and walked over to grab the trash bag. "I hope you're embarrassed," He said confidently.

They made their way to the trash that was oddly far in the distance. Squidward tossed the trash into the garbage bin, "See, that wasn't too bad—"

And at that moment, a blunt force met the top of his head, leaving Squidward drowning in the darkness that was his unconsciousness.
