Patrick Star had just gotten comfortable on his sand couch, but a rumble in his stomach made him crave something other than television. It was that time of day again: time for his krabby patty run.
He opened his rock with a grunt and the sun stung his eyes. He looked over at Spongebob's house; it was quieter than usual. It appeared Squidward hadn't left his house yet either since his lights were still on. The thoughts quickly left his mind as they were interrupted by the growling of his stomach once more.
However, when Patrick arrived at the Krusty Krab, he lost his appetite immediately. His stomach dropped as he stared at the giant "CLOSED" sign on the front doors. No one else was around to witness his distress. The inside of the Krusty Krab he once knew was now full of darkness; no one could be seen inside, either.
What was he supposed to eat now?
He turned to head home but was quickly met face to face with Sandy Cheeks, the only land mammal in town. Patrick dumbly stared at her and grunted in surprise.
"Hiya Patrick," she said, fidgeting with her clothes a bit, "Have you seen SpongeBob around? I came to see if he was working today since no one answered the door of his home. I need him for a few experiments I've been working on." She smiled slightly.
"No, uh, I don't think he's working today," he lifted a heavy finger towards the "CLOSED" sign covering both transparent doors. "I don't think anyone is."
Sandy's eyebrows raised at the sight, taking a step back in shock. The Krusty Krab would never just close down. It was far too popular with countless customers who came every day. Taking another look around, she realized that she and Patrick were not alone, but a swarm of people had appeared, all of them looking distressed about the sight in front of them as well.
Sandy stepped up to the doors and cupped her eyes as she looked inside. Dust had already started to form on the tables, but she saw a dim light coming from back where the kitchen was. She didn't think it as much and turned to speak to the crowd.
She projected her voice as she spoke, "Citizens of Bikini Bottom!" People blinked as they quieted and gave her their attention. "Does anyone have any information about the Krusty Krab's closing?" No one spoke, and there was a cough in the crowd somewhere. "Please," she began again, "I'm only trying to figure this out."
A fish who went by the name of Fred stepped forward. His dark green skin and brown pants looked familiar to Sandy. "Rumor has it the employees all quit."
Fred immediately backed up into the crowd again, and Sandy mumbled under her breath. "Quit?" She scoffed with unbelief. "Squidward, maybe. But SpongeBob? I don't think that word is even in his vocabulary."
"Has anyone seen them?" She said once again, but that same awkward silence returned to the crowd like a slap on her face. She began walking, "Thanks for the help," she muttered. "The fish in this town are as stupid as kelp."
Grabbing Patrick's arm to pull him along, she headed straight towards Spongebob's pineapple.
"This makes less sense than a mermaid at a rodeo..." she mumbled under her breath and continued walking. She rose her voice, "And you haven't heard from SpongeBob? Aren't you supposed to be his best friend?"
"I am!" He exclaimed. "But no...not for a few days."
"Mr. Krabs?" Patrick shook his head.
"What about Squidward?"
Silence. If all three of them were gone...
She shook her head. There must be a logical explanation for all of this. They wouldn't just disappear without a trace. "Let's try Spongebob's house again. Maybe he's sick or something."
Sandy knew SpongeBob wasn't sick or simply taking a leave of absence. But denial was creeping up on her. There was nothing else to think that would keep her calm.
They walked up to the front door of Spongebob's house, but not before noticing the pile of mail sitting in front of his door completely untouched. "That's weird," Patrick said. "He never just leaves this stuff sitting here."
They placed his packages aside and knocked, the hollow sound sending shivers down their spines. No response. Sandy knocked again. It was the same.
"SpongeBob?" She yelled into the door as if someone was standing on the other side. That uneasy feeling was only building up by the moment. Then she realized.
The Window!
Sandy raced to the right side of Spongebob's pineapple and tried at the window that led into the living room. It was locked. She cursed under her breath until she remembered the emergency tools she always carried with her.
She quickly scrummaged through her belongings until she found the screwdriver. Each twist of the window's bolts made Sandy's heart beat faster. What if he was in trouble? What if she was too late?
When all the bolts had been removed, she quickly hopped through the window, Patrick following with a struggle.
There was a thud, and they were inside. Sandy's breath hitched.
Sandy was very smart, and her determination to find her friends was like no other. She obeyed logic, but this situation seemed to defy all she knew. What she saw sent her thoughts reeling and heart racing. She lost balance for a second and Patrick's eyes went wide.
It was in that moment Sandy realized that the presence of something malicious and despicable had taken over the town of Bikini Bottom.
