"Sandy."
Squidward tasted the words on his lips. It didn't feel real.
Dropping to his knees, heavy tears fell down Squidward's cheeks.
He tried speaking, his eyes glued to the floor as if one look at Sandy would wake him up from this cruel dream he was having. "I—," Squidward started, but he choked on his words before they came out.
Sandy stood there before him, her eyes wide and hands by her mouth. She still hadn't processed what was happening. The sight of Squidward was not a pretty one, and seeing him in this state made her stomach weak. But he was alive.
"Sandy," his voice broke. "Please, I can't—"
Squidward took in a large breath but it didn't feel like enough. His body felt immovable all of a sudden.
And after a few moments, Sandy dropped to his side. Squidward looked up at her, blinking to clear his vision.
"It's okay," was all she said. Sandy put a smile on her face that Squidward knew was fake, but it was enough. Her being here and saying those words was enough. "You're alive, you're okay now." It was all she could think of saying without breaking down herself.
She took him in her arms and felt her shoulder dampen from Squidward's cries. It was as if seeing her gave him some hope that he was finally free. "You're alive," she said again in a mere whisper, this time more so to reassure herself that it was real. She came to the conclusion that whatever happened to him...he hadn't allowed himself to feel anything. This seemed to take him over the edge.
Once his breathing finally calmed down, Sandy spoke with hesitation, "Squidward—"
She inhaled sharply before continuing on, tears swelling in her eyes as well now, "You have to tell me what happened."
Still facing the floor, Squidward wiped the tears from his eyes with one arm. He thought about what to tell her first; how to ask for help. How to tell her that the person she loved was a monster.
But he thought back on where his ignorance led him. And he would give anything to ensure Sandy was never put through what he experienced.
So, he mustered all of the courage he could summon, and said it.
"SpongeBob."
Sandy blinked a few times, not understanding what he meant. "Sponge? What's he got to do with this—"
"SpongeBob did this to me."
He swallowed his guilt, and before Sandy could ask one of her many questions, he continued on.
"He did this." Squidward began, not being able to say his name again. "He captured me and tortured me endlessly for days. I was starved constantly...only to be used as a punching bag for his feelings. I nearly escaped once, but failed. And of course it cost me. If I said one thing he disagreed with or that was out of line...I would face the consequences," he gestured to his cut off leg that was now a dark shade of purple. "Not only that, he would cut out pieces of me—my skin—he would use it for fucking Krabby Patties."
Sandy's stomach twisted. There was no way...SpongeBob did all of this.
"Are you sure—"
"Does it look like I'm not sure, Sandy?!" He spat, the tears in his eyes resurfacing once again. Squidward sighed as his breath shook. "I didn't believe it myself at first, either." He put a hand to Sandy's arm, "He's gone. The SpongeBob you and I know is gone. And he isn't coming back. At least not in this life."
She was silent for a while, so Squidward went on. "I know you care for him. And I know that what you feel for him is none of my business—"
"It's fine," Sandy said plainly. She took a deep breath and calmed herself. How selfish of her to focus more on the person she loved rather than the person broken in front of her. Here she was being comforted by someone who hadn't felt comfort in who knows how long.
