After practically barfing all of his insides out, Squidward was blindfolded and taken back to the secluded piece of underground that felt nothing like home.
It was very late in the night, and Squid was yet to rid himself of the lingering taste in his mouth. His taste buds deceived him with such an exquisite thing. Why was it that something so disturbing and fowl tasted so amazing?
But Squidward had a bigger problem weighing him down. The weight and smell of Mr. Krab's exoskeleton never once left him. A few more hours and flies would be surrounding him.
Once they returned, Squidward was surprised to see a full sized bed in the room he once "lived in". When had SpongeBob put that there? And why? He wasn't about to complain.
"A gift," SpongeBob said, as if answering Squid's mental question.
Squidward was only able to give SpongeBob a look that said "Why?"
"Despite your most recent endeavors," he took a seat at the edge of the bed, "I think you deserve it." Squidward noted how the deep blue sheets clashed with his eyes.
But Squidward knew it was quite the opposite. He had done anything but what SpongeBob asked of him.
Still, he was not going to complain. Squidward looked down at the exoskeleton he was still in. Before he could ask, SpongeBob spoke, "Ah, yes. That."
He walked over to Squidward and gently lifted him out of the exoskeleton with a grunt. A wave of cold air hit Squidward with pleasure, and he could relish in the feeling. It was as if he could breathe again.
"Thank you." It was all Squidward could say, even though he felt no gratitude towards the sponge.
Squidward was given his clothes back, putting them on as an eery silence filled the air. He felt as though now was an okay time for questions. And he had many.
"Why did you let Sandy and Patrick go?"
Squidward spoke calmly, still trying to ward off the pain in his arm. He worried that his words would remind him or simply be a form of encouragement.
SpongeBob had no reaction, looking at the floor with a moving mind. "Sandy and Patrick should not be a part of this. They have no idea what they're getting into."
Squidward wondered what exactly 'this' was, but didn't dare ask.
He was so broken. Broken and furious because of SpongeBob. There were so many things he wanted to do and say, but couldn't because of the consequences he knew he would have to face.
But for now, he needed to get SpongeBob to think that he was warming up to him. It was the only way he could escape without SpongeBob catching him. Perhaps today's experiences led Squidward to realize that putting up a fight was only making his situation worse.
So Squidward pushed his questions aside and spoke with an endearing smile, "I understand you."
SpongeBob looked upward and met his eyes, eyebrows turning in with confusion. Had he truly meant that? SpongeBob had never expected Squidward to say such a thing.
"It's true," Squidward started, the lies rotting his teeth, "I understand why you're doing all of this."
The world caved in around SpongeBob, leaving only him and his lover in the center. He truly was everything SpongeBob had hoped for.
SpongeBob approached him slowly, standing up on his tippy toes as he kissed Squidward's cheek lightly.
He tried not to flinch at the action, and plastered a slight smile on his face. Squidward knew this would be a long, hard part to play.
