Fast footfalls and unsteady breaths, the sounds of the runners taking chase from behind, and the terrified girl beside me matching the first two. Sweat covered us and the amount of time having passed immeasurable. My eyes scanned our surroundings as I tried to come up with a way to get her somewhere safe. I needed to take this hoard away from her. Looking off to the side I saw we were a noticeable distance away from the approaching hoard. I didn't have much time to do what I wanted to. I had to act now. "Emira, this way!" I called out to her before rushing to an ally blocked by a chain-linked fence.

"Come on," I placed my back against it and interlocked my hands in front of me, "I'll boost you up," I said and she placed her hands on my shoulders and a foot in my hands. Then she pushed herself up grabbing the top of the fence as I stood and lifted her up higher. She pulled herself up and overturned to face the fence.

"Your turn." She said as her feet met the ground before looking behind me. "Please hurry! They're getting close!" She shouted, scared for my safety when all that mattered was hers. I needed to keep her safe and we needed to find Amity together.

"Sorry Emira, but this was only for you." I looked to the side and noticed they were getting closer.

"What? Luz, no!" She screamed, stepping forward and wrapping her fingers around the holes in the fence, gripping it.

"This isn't up for debate! Get in a building somewhere safe and I'll lead them away and come back for you!" I yelled back before stepping back from the fence and sprinting in the same direction I had been going before. This time without Emira and a goal to lead them as far from her as possible. I picked up a random pipe discarded on the ground and started to smash the windows of the cars near me to make as much noise as possible and keep their attention on me. I kept moving as I stepped on shattered glass only to create more in the process.

Something crashed into me from behind and I fell forward before pushing myself up. I forgot I'd been dealing with runners but I couldn't turn. I needed to save the pills I had left. So I slammed my pipe into its skull and pushed myself up as another caught up and tried to grab at me. Shaking it off I began to sprint once again without looking back this time. I saw a firetruck up ahead with its ladder raised up to a window on the side of a half-burned building. When I reached it I jumped, gripping the roof of it and pulling myself up and over.

The runners reached it soon after and slammed against its side trying to reach me and causing it to shake. I unsteadily made my way to the ladder before stumbling up on it. Once reaching the window I dove in. I wanted to catch my breath but I didn't have the time to do so when I heard the sound of something moving around. I pushed myself up to see the light of a flashlight shining out into the hall from one of the rooms a few feet away from me. Someone stepped out of the room holding a gun and turned to see me on the ground bringing it out to aim right at me.

"Don't move!" They shouted though I heard the trembling in their voice. I closed my eyes and tried to listen in on my surroundings. I smelled the residue of the burnt building and I heard the hoard of runners below. But there was something else close and it was rotten. I covered my nose and tried to stop myself from gagging. It wasn't far and was extremely pungent to my senses. It was overwhelming. I could barely process what the guy had been saying as he approached me. Though a monster burst from one of the rooms behind him and he screamed as it reached out for him instead of lunging like other monsters. In fact, this monster was unlike any I'd seen before.

It was bigger, slower, and looked almost decomposed in a way. I fell back and slid away from it with wide eyes. The guy shot frantically and the monster seemed unfazed by the large amount of bullets entering its stomach yet the amount of blood that poured out should have proved the opposite. This monster had been bigger than most, slower but far stronger. A piece of its skin began peeling off its face. I pushed myself to stand, my legs shaking only for the firetruck to finally tilt over. My senses kicked in and my reflex led me to dive to the side narrowly avoiding the ladder which broke through the side of the building. The fire had surely made the structure of it far weaker and I rolled out of the way to avoid pieces of the wall falling over.
