Cairo, Egypt, 1988...
Gladius POV
Fate often works in strange ways. Perhaps it was fate that I was in that run-down bar in Cairo, Egypt. Perhaps it was fate that I'd been there on that particular night and perhaps it was fate that caused what happened to happen.
I sat at the counter in some random bar, I didn't even know the name of it. It'd been over a month since I'd last been given a job, last time was to simply serve as a bodyguard to some politician. Personally, I preferred bodyguard work. After that job had concluded, I'd been left to wander once more.
My travels lead me here. Sat at a counter flicking through the diary in front of me. It belonged to my ancestor and had been passed down from generation to generation. It contained a particularly interesting entry early on that I'd yet to wrap my head around.
As I took a sip of my drink, turning the page, a voice caught my attention. In an environment such as this, they could have been speaking to anyone, however what caught my attention was that they addressed me directly.
"Are you the one they call 'Gladius'?"
My head snapped around to the source of the voice and straight away I noticed an elderly woman staring up at me, I'd have referred to her as a hag, but not to her face. Her expression held a glare that made me uneasy, however I decided to humour her. "Who's asking?"
The elderly woman tapped her cane on the ground and snapped shrilly "Someone who may have a job for you. Answer the question!" Turning to face her properly "If that's the case, then we discuss this somewhere more confidentially."
As I said this the old woman turned her back to me and spoke "Follow me." She made a gesture with her hand and for a moment I was caught off guard by the fact that she had TWO RIGHT HANDS! Though I didn't let this distract me for long, pocketing the diary once again before getting up to follow after her.
Once outside the bar, I asked "Where are we going?" What the hag said next made my eyebrow raise in confusion. "We're going to my Lord. He is the one who wishes to hire your services." Before I could ask anything else, she'd turned and continued walking.
Timeskip...
I don't know how long I'd been following the elder for but eventually we arrived at what I believed to be our destination. A large building, if the elder's personality didn't put me on edge, this certainly did. The building held a menacing, somewhat sinister presence.
The hag continued forward, pushing open a set of double doors before turning back to me and once again gesturing me to follow. I did just that, keeping on my guard though. I had no idea what to expect within this building.
The inside was even darker than the night outside. The corridors ahead were barely lit, luckily, the elderly woman knew her way around. She guided me silently through the corridors for a few minutes until at last, we arrived at another set of doors.
The woman pushed the doors open and it was at this point she finally spoke. Not to me though. "Lord DIO, I have brought the one known as Gladius." Before I could take in the room clearly, a cold voice spoke. "Good work Enya." His praise though sounded hollow and likely false.
