Valentine pulling off something like thas was completely understandable. I mean, I knew her life isn’t exactly perfect. Her parents were always at each other’s necks when they were together. A fight could start out like, “Did you take my watch?” and turn into, “You’re a useless piece of shit!” And no matter what, Valentine always had to sit it out: listening to every word that came out of their mouths until they were done and locked up in their separate rooms.

Finally, they decided to get a divorce once Valentine was seven years old. Ever since, she couldn’t figure out whether it was for the better or not. She never saw her mom ever again and her dad’s a wreck. So leaving our little piece of the world was something I knew she was bound to do one way or another.

The land became flat and we were just rolling between fields of some sort. Valentine shuffled in her seat, rubbing her eyes and yawning, “Good morning.”

“Morning,” I looked over at her as she stretched and almost whacked my face.

“Did you have breakfast?” Reaching back, she blindly picked a random package.

“Ooo...” The crinkling of plastic sounded foreign to my ears since it had been so silent, put aside Valentine's quiet breathing and the soft music flowing out of the car’s speakers.

“Malteaser?”

“What? Malteasers for breakfast?” Even though my focus was back on the road, I felt her smile.

“And you’re complaining because...?” Eh...

“Hand them over.” Her laugh emanated from her mouth. All the awkwardness felt like it was melting away and it was replaced by something that made me want to never stop grinning my head off. I was happy that I said yes to all of this. Happy that I didn’t let go. Happy that we were here, right now, and that it was all that mattered.
