When we're close to the log cabin I start looking for side roads that could lead up to the house. I find the obvious one about a quarter of a mile from our turn off. No gate, and it's too far away to see if there are any recent tire tracks.
"Do we want to unload the food first or go clear the ridge house?" I ask the guys.
Aj sighs, "Neither. There isn't room to add everyone, so we'll need to go grab the rest of the vehicles. I'm not unloading and reloading."
"I agree, that would be a waste of time. Just curious were there any seeds in the store?"
"No." Rupert answers. We make the turn that will take us back to the log cabin, and up the narrow drive.
Leon and River get the gates for us this time, "Good haul?" Leon asks.
Rupert shrugs, "Get the jeep ready we're going to check out the ridge house."
River nods leaving the gate open, rushing to the garden where I see Locklin was watering. How sweet of him, though I'm pretty peeved I'll have to leave it in Addy's incapable hands.
Leon pulls me out of the back where I was squished. "Hey baby I missed you." He says, kissing me.
"I missed you too." I giggle.
Jack rushes up to us, "We added a gate towards that house and started clearing a trail it's a good mile away but that's not bad." He smiles at us.
"Are you coming to check it out with us?" I ask him.
"Totally, we have to make both places secure. Should we load more supplies in the jeep?" Jack asks Ollie.
"Nah, we can come back and get them tomorrow if we do end up staying there." Ollie answers.
I get back in the truck and we drive back down the driveway taking the lead as we weave in between cars, to make it to the paved road. This road is wider and nicer, as we get off the side of the mountain and onto flatter ground. A high black metal fence and fancy-looking gate block our way.
"Half the work may already be done." Aj says jumping out to unlock the gate.
It takes him a few minutes before the gate swings inward and Aj returns to the truck. "How was it secured?" I ask him.
He drops a pair of bolt cutters onto the center console, "Just a pad lock. I would think this wasn't a permanent residency. We'll see though."
We drive up the circular driveway, I note that from the front there is a detached building. Then some smaller looking sheds and a cottage off to the side.
Rupert's eyes find mine, "Be on lookout?"
I nod, "Yes, sir."
Jack places Addy by my side as he, Matt and River go clear the big outer building first. Locklin and Leon head for the cottage and the rest take on the house. Addy is practically shaking next to me, why didn't Jack just leave her behind?
"Are you going to be able to handle supporting you and my brother alone?" I ask her.
She blinks at me, "What are you talking about?"
"If we all move to this house sure we can help out now and again but there a lot more of us, so we'll need our supplies. Can you handle growing food so the two of you don't starve? Or sew patches into clothes?"
Her eyes tear up, "I haven't even graduated high school I can't handle anything on my own." She whines.
I huff, trying not to be rude, "Schooling doesn't matter anymore. It's going to take hard work to be able to survive this new world. Start reading some of the gardening books we found in the garage of the log cabin. Educate yourself on what's going to matter."
She nods, "I'll try."
We watch as Locklin and Leon leave the cabin blood staining their hands. "They found something." I comment.
Addy's shaking starts up again. This time I roll my eyes, she's never going to be able to handle this new world. It's not long before my brother, Matt and River join us.
"That garage is amazing," Matt tells me.
"All clear?" I ask, before asking what's inside.
Jack nods wrapping an arm around Addy, "Yeah, there were a few rogue zombies trapped in there and we'll take them out later."
Matt's too excited, "There are a few sports cars in there. But the most exciting thing is a forge and a shit ton of weapons. I'm going to guess it was probably a hobby. But a super useful one now."
I laugh, "That is pretty cool. Maybe we could recycle those cars blocking the road into something useful."
"We'll see." River smiles at me, I'm a bit stunned he's never smiled at me.
Matt pinches me, "Any idea what's happening in the main house?"
I shake my head gently, "Not a clue. Locklin and Leon joined them though."
It takes them a full hour to clear the main house, when Ollie comes back outside to get us I have to pee so bad I'm about to pee myself.
"Bathroom?" I ask as I rush inside, running smack into Locklin.
He chuckles pointing at a door nearby. I scurry off, finding a stunning half bath. As I sit down, I take in the marble counter top,and marble pedestal sink, with neat metal drawers underneath for storage. It'sreally cool. If this is what the bathroom looks like I can't wait to see therest of the house.
