pale faced and shaking, luke walked to the edge of the park. he could see a few people inside but he made no attempt to open the gate.
yesterday when salem had told him she died, he was frozen in place. by the time he realized, she had gone.
today would be different, luke thought to himself. rather than talk to salem, he would follow her and not let her leave the park alone.
taking a big breath to steady his heart, he moved forward to open the gate as a cold hand reached for it too. luke pulled his hand away, feeling the spark he'd only ever felt once before.
"sorry," salem apologized, looking down at her feet. she wore her normal ballet flats and her outfit was white as it used to be.
"no, that's okay," luke stammered. "you go." he held the gate open for her and let her step inside.
"I bet you have questions."
luke shrugged, he didn't want to discourage her. they walked in silence until they reached the other end of the park.
salem turned to luke and quietly spoke, "they want me to get back. goodbye, luke."
who's they?
"salem, wait up," luke called after her. he followed her out of the park gate.
"what are you doing?"
"just walking with you."
"well," she gulped. "don't."
"why-" luke began to ask but was cut off by a loud noise behind him.
he turned to check and when he looked back, salem was gone.
