"Uncle Jim?... P'Wen," Liming called out to the two men entering the restaurant.
"Who's complaining, Uncle? No one, right, Li Ming," Saleng denied his earlier complaint.
"Who will believe you, Saleng... Your voice is so loud that I could hear your complaints even from far away in the restaurant," Uncle Jim scolded Saleng.
"And you, Li Ming... I didn't even see your shadow before I woke up, and I only knew you were at Heart's house through your text... Can't you even wait for me to wake up—"
"Come on... Li Ming is already here. Why are you still scolding him... and he's just like you. You didn't even tell Saleng that you left the restaurant... that you left him alone," Wen intervened, stopping Jim from scolding Li Ming further.
Li Ming simply gave a thumbs up to Wen, while Jim didn't look in his direction.
"But that's not the same situation—"
"Okay... okay... Uncle Jim, let's just eat this cake that you brought. I've become hungry working alone here," Saleng said, taking the cake from Jim's hand.
"You said you're not complaining, huh," Jim remarked, handing over the cake.
"Hahaha... I'm not... AeSal, come here... Uncle Jim brought a cake," Saleng called out to his daughter.
"WAHHHH... Cakey... Cakey," AeSal exclaimed, running towards her father.
"Heart... *Uncle Jim brought a cake*. *Let's prepare the food you bought earlier too*," Liming said, approaching Heart, who was left behind as AeSal eagerly looked at the cake her mother was preparing.
"P'Wen... Uncle Jim... We will prepare the food Heart bought at the mall... Can you stop P'Saleng if he tries to eat all the cake," Li Ming joked.
Saleng, enjoying his cake, suddenly choked upon hearing Li Ming's remark.
"Damn yo—... Ouch... honey, why are you hitting my head again," Saleng complained.
"AeSal is here... no curse words," Praew scolded.
Saleng only rubbed his head silently, as his wife's scolding quieted him. The others present laughed at the banter between the married couple, knowing that Praew was the only one who could silence Saleng.
...
"Uhmm... Is Heart going home?" Jim asked Li Ming, who had entered the house when Heart's dad picked him up.
"Krub, Uncle... How about P'Wen?" Li Ming inquired.
"He already left too," Jim replied.
"Then... I will sleep now, Uncle... Goodnight," Li Ming said, heading to his room, but Jim stopped him.
"Wait... Li Ming... How many weeks left before both of you go to America?" Jim asked.
"It's only 2 weeks left, Uncle... Why?" Li Ming asked, confused.
"Nothing... Come here for a second," Jim ordered, asking Li Ming to come closer.
"Uncle... What's this... don't tell me you're still upset that I left without telling you..." Li Ming said, confused but following his uncle's instructions.
"This kid... Who's upset, huh... I just wanted to give this to you," Jim said, attaching a necklace around Li Ming's neck.
"This—"
"It's for you... That's a very expensive necklace, so take care of it," Jim said, smiling at his speechless nephew.
"Thank you, Uncle," Li Ming said, hugging his uncle.
This necklace was no ordinary one. It was the only one Li Ming's parents had given him before they passed away. However, during a time when his Uncle Jim needed hospital care and they had no money, Li Ming had no choice but to sell it. He didn't regret selling it because his uncle's life was more important. Until now, he didn't mind not having the necklace anymore. But seeing it today made him so happy that he wanted to hug his uncle.
"Don't take it off your neck again, Li Ming," Jim said, patting his nephew's back.
