In the midst of the bustling crowd, where people were calling out the names of their family, friends, and lovers to float their baskets in the river, their smiles and happiness couldn't be hidden as they enjoyed the Krathong festival.
On the other side, a man sat alone, watching the festivities. He remembered a man whom he had promised to celebrate the Krathong festival with...
"You see, Heart... We promised each other that we would celebrate the Krathong festival someday... But... for the past five years, I've been the one fulfilling that promise," Li Ming said, tears in his eyes. The expressionless face he had shown earlier to his uncle and his peers was now gone.
"Oiii..."
Suddenly, a bicycle crashed in Li Ming's direction.
"Shia... Are you okay? Sorry, krub," said the man, quickly getting up when he saw that he had almost hit Li Ming with his bicycle.
"I'm okay..." Li Ming assured the man.
"Okay, Phi? Look, you're bleeding," the man pointed out, indicating the scratches on Li Ming's arms.
Li Ming hadn't noticed it before. While avoiding the man on the bicycle, his arms had been scratched by a chair. The wound was not too big, but the bleeding was noticeable, especially in the dark.
Seeing the blood, Li Ming had a panic attack. Since Heart passed away, he had developed this illness. His uncle was unaware of this, so Li Ming did his best to avoid seeing blood.
"Phi... Are you okay?" the man asked, worriedly, seeing Li Ming's body shaking so hard. Li Ming didn't know what happened next, but he only heard the man yell as he suddenly lost consciousness.
...
"Where am I?" Li Ming asked upon waking up.
"Hello, P'Liming... You're in our house," the man replied.
"You are?" Li Ming asked, confused by the man's familiarity.
"Ah, you don't remember me, Phi... I'm Kaipa, the chicken delivery man at your restaurant... and I'm sorry for what happened earlier," Kaipa explained. He had brought Li Ming to their house after finding him unconscious and feeling guilty about the incident.
"I see... It's okay," Li Ming replied. He didn't remember Kaipa because he had only seen him once. With Li Ming not always staying at home for the past five years, it was understandable that he couldn't recall the man.
"Kaipa... Is he awake?" a woman dressed in a Chinese traditional Qipao entered the room.
"Krub Ma... He is P'Liming-"
"You're the fortune-teller they talk about," Li Ming interrupted Kaipa's words.
"Yes... And why?" Kaipa's mom asked, looking at Li Ming.
"Can I talk to you alone?" Li Ming requested.
"Ah... Then, Ma, P'Liming... I'll leave first," Kaipa said, noticing Li Ming's desire to speak with his mother alone.
...
"You want to ask me about reincarnation, right?" Kaipa's mom said, observing Li Ming's silence.
"You can guess?" Li Ming asked, shocked. He knew she was a fortune-teller, but he still found it hard to believe in people who could predict the future.
"No... Actually, I can't see your future... but this is not my first time experiencing it... People in situations like yours, where they have lost a loved one or something important, always seek reincarnation to be reborn and regain what they have lost," Kaipa's mom explained, looking serious.
"If you already know... Can you help me to be reincarnated... I beg you, Auntie," Li Ming pleaded, kneeling in front of Kaipa's mom.
"Sorry... But I can't..."
