One morning, Huckleberry Hound and his friends were making some funny hats to wear. Huck put googly eyes on his hat to make it look like it had a face. Pixie and Dixie put feathers in their favorite colors in their hats, Hokey Wolf put lots of spots on his hat, and Mr. Jinks put dozens of swirly straws on his. Huck soon put on his funny hat, and showed it to the others.
"Look at me, y'all!" he chuckled. "My hat has a face on it!"
That caused everyone to start laughing.
"Hey, look at ours!" Pixie cried. "Our hats have...
"...matching feathers!" Dixie finished.
"Mine's has spots all over it!" Hokey shouted, making a silly face.
"But mine's is the funniest of all!" Jinks snickered.
Then he put his hat on his head. The whole gang erupted into laughter.
"I know what would make it even funnier!" Huck chuckled. Then he went over to Jinks and drew a familiar goofy face on his hat. "Now you look even funnier!!" he cackled.
Everyone erupted into wild laughter. Well, almost everyone. Jinks was the only one that wasn;t laughing at all. "Very funny, Huck. Very funny."
A little while later, Huck was getting ready for lunch, but then he remembered something that caught his attention.
"Hey, fellers!" he called. "Jinks' birthday is in two days! We gotta think of something to do for him!"
"Oh, that's right!" Hokey cried. "His birthday is just before yours, isn't it?"
"What could we do?" Pixie wondered.
"Yeah, Jinksey's real picky when it comes to parties," Dixie said. "Especially his birthday party!"
"Yeah, he tends to get really fussy at times," Huck agreed. "I reckon we'll have to come up with something a mite fancier than just a regular-type birthday party. But of course, he'll still want a cake and ice cream."
"Yeah, and he'll want a special birthday supper," Hokey added. "We could set up the table real nice and formal, with a tablecloth and everything."
"Jinks likes balloons too!" Dixie said. "But he only likes certain colors of balloons."
"And he doesn't like horns or noisemakers or any of those party favors that you do, Huck," Pixie sighed sadly. "He'd rather have something a little less noisy."
"Then maybe he likes pots and pans?"
"That's the only exception!"
"Well, I reckon he'd like some real nice stuff for presents," Huck continued. "In fact, since he likes to relax, I wonder if maybe he'd like a new pillow or something."
"Yeah!" Hokey agreed. "Oh, and you know what he'd love most of all? If we all looked like cats! So we could all wear cat ears, cat paws, and cat tails!"
"Great idea!" Huck smiled. "I think I'd make a pretty cute kitty cat!"
"Not us!" Dixie said.
"We can't dress up like cats!" Pixie protested. "Mice dressed like cats? It's just not right!"
"Then, uh, you two can just go as yourselves," Huck replied, biting his lip. "Sorry, fellers."
"It's fine, Huck," Dixie replied.
"Well then, let's get busy!" Hokey beamed. "We only have two days to get ready!"
"But we have to be very quiet!" Huck whispered. "We wanna make it a surprise!"
