The fox plush was now in Coraline's room in the Other world and Coraline woke up, thinking that she was back in the real world. It was holding Merita's glasses in its mouth with a sad expression.
Coraline: ( happily: ) Mom! Dad!
Coraline's smile turned to shock when she saw that she was still in the Other World.
Coraline: Oh god. I'm still here? ( Sees the fox plush ) What are you doing in here- Wait, are those...
Coraline went to the fox plush and it gave her the glasses and she saw that there was a small crack in the right lense of the glasses.
Coraline: ( worried: ) Mery... ( Her face turned into a determined expression ) ( to the fox plush: ) Come on, we're going to find her and go home.
The fox plush made a happy " yip " and it jumped into Coraline's arms, and she hangs the glasses on her shirt. They left the room and raced downstairs to the Other living room where the little door is, but the living room is locked tight. She pulls at the handles, plants her foot on the door, and tries with all her might, but it was no use. She stops, panting, then hears a piano note being hit over and over. Coraline walks to the study with the fox plush now walking beside her with a cute determined expression, and Coraline opens the door and they find the Other Father sitting at the piano, his back turned to them, hitting the note. Coraline spoke in the bravest voice she could make.
Coraline: Hey you! Where's the Other Mother? I want to find Merita and go home.
The Other Father turned around to Coraline and the fox plush, he looked ill; his hair messed and his glasses askew.
Other Father: All will be swell, soon as Mother's refreshed. Her strength is our strength.-
The white gloved hands pop out of the piano, one covers the Other Father's mouth and the other wags its finger in his face, before the hands went back in the piano.
Other Father: Mustn't talk when Mother's not here.
Coraline: If you won't even talk to me, I'm gonna find the Other Wybie, He'll help me. ( She turns to leave )
Other Father: No point; he and the kitsune pulled long faces...( He pulls down the corners of his mouth impossibly far )...and Mother didn't like it.
The piano hands pop out again, and aggressively shut the Other Father's mouth and spins him away from Coraline. Frightened, she and the fox plush runs to the door that leads outside, Coraline pulls it open and she picks up the fox plush. She then kept running until she got to where the well is supposed to be, and she began fast walking. They then heard cat meows and looked down to find the cat walking beside them.
Cat: ( to Coraline: ) And what do you think you're doing?
Coraline: Well, I'm gettin' outta here and look for Merita. That's what I'm doing.
The sky starts to brighten and the trees around them become wire-thin shapes of trees.
Coraline: Huh? Something's wrong. Shouldn't the old well be here?
The remnants of their surroundings give way to a pale, empty nothingness.
Cat: Nothing out here . . . It's the empty part of this world. She only made what she knew would impress you. Only the kitsune knows where the second exit of this world is.
Coraline: But why? Why does she want me?
Cat: She wants something to love, I think. Something that's not her except for the kitsune. . . Or maybe she'd just love something to eat.
Coraline: Eat?! That's ridiculous, mothers don't eat daughters! Also, who is this " kitsune " or what is a " kitsune "?
Cat: I don't know. How do you taste? As for who and what the " kitsune " is... A kitsune is a fox shapeshifter, it's the one creature that can defeat her and take over this world. As for who the kitsune is, you already know who even though she herself doesn't remember as to what she is...
A shape rises in front of them in the whiteness and becomes the beautiful Other House, and everything reappears as the three walked closer to the house.
Coraline: Huh? But how can you walk away from something and still come back to it.
Cat: Walk around the world.
Coraline: Small world.
The fox plush and the cat then suddenly tensed up, and focused on a shrub.
Cat: Hang on-
The fox plush jumped out of Coraline's arms and bolts into the shrub, and chased out one of the jumping mice with a tiny trumpet. Before Coraline can blink, the cat pinned the mouse down.
Coraline: ( to The cat and the fox plush: ) Stop, he's one of the circus mice!
With a swift blow of his paw, the cat knocks the mouse into the air, and the fox plush catches it in its mouth. The fox plush gives a quick killing bite, Coraline gasps, and the mouse transforms into a big dead rat. Coraline is stunned. The fox plush drops the rat on the ground, and it nudges the rat towards the cat, who looks at the plush in approval.
Cat: I don't like rats at the best of times, but this one was sounding an alarm.
The cat picks up the rat, and heads off. Coraline then pets the fox plush.
Coraline: Gooooood kitty.
Coraline looks to the house with a determined look. She then got on the porch with the fox plush following her, and took a heavy cane from a umbrella stand and hits it into her hand, and she glanced down at the fox plush.
Coraline: Let's go find Mery and get out of here.
The fox plush makes a determined " yip " in response.
