Wella reg! 'Reg' is short for 'raga' which is short for 'ragazzi' hahaaha (slang words)

************************************************************************

Today's lesson is very important as I'm going to teach you on how to express having to do something.

Look at the following phrases, for example:

I have to do my homework

You must go home

He shouldn't do that

etc.

E in italiano?

Vediamo!

***********************************************************

To have to-dovere (dov-EH-reh)

This verb is also meant to say 'assignment' or 'chore', when untreated as a verb. It is also masculine, in this case: il dovere, i doveri (chore, chores).

Doveri di casa-house chores

When treated as a verb, it either means 'have to do' or 'must do' depending on the situation. Simply add the infinitive form after, like in English:

dovere+infinitive verb+complements.

Example: Devo fare-I have to do/must do

Conjugation:

Devo

Devi

Deve

Dobbiamo

Dovete

DEVono

As you can see, it is an irregular verb because of the first two 2° plural persons, 'noi' and 'voi'.

Let's use it in examples.

Devo fare i compiti oggi-I have to do my homework today

Devi fare i compiti-You must do your homework/you have to do your homework

Deve andare a scuola!-he/she must go to school!

Deve andare a scuola tutti i giorni-He/she has to/must go to school everyday

The difference is the third sentence ends with an exclamation mark, making it a 'must' verb. This may vary, however.

Non dobbiamo mangiare tanto-We don't have to eat a lot./We mustn't eat too much. (with must, change 'a lot' to 'too much' in English.)

Dovete vedere questo film!-You have to see this movie!

Devono dormire presto-they have to sleep early

Eccetera. (e-CHEH-teh-rah)

-------------------------

How about 'should'? It's also very important to know in Italian as it can be used as a form of advice, therefore not impolite.

should-conditional present of verb 'dovere'

io dovrei-I should

tu dovresti-you should

lui/lei dovrebbe-he/she should

noi dovremmo-we should

voi dovreste-you should

loro doVREbbero-they should

(Note: The third person singular 'dovrebbe' is similar to the third person plural 'dovrebbero')

Conjugate it the same way as you would with 'dovere'!

Dovresti leggere! You should read!

Dovrebbe parlare-He/She should speak

Dovremmo imparare bene l'inglese-we should learn to speak English well

Non dovrei dire niente-I shouldn't say anything

Eccetera.

Mi raccomando! (Attention!/be careful!). Dovremmo has two m's, not one. 'Dovremo' is actually a word and means 'we will have to'!

I will be putting exercises soon. I mean, dovrei presto... (I should soon...)
