These are really easy, because all you have to do is change the -o ending of an adjective to an -a, then add -mente, corresponding to -ly in English. All other adjectives simply take -ly. These are known as derived adverbs (avverbi derivati)

 Example:

Forte-strong

Fortemente-strongly

With an -e-, nothing changes.

Veloce-quick/fast

Velocemente-quickly/fast

SEMplice-simple

Semplicemente-simply

Alto-high/tall

Altamente-highly

Remove the final -o of alto and add -a-mente

As in: He is highly ambiguous. Lui è altamente ambiguo.

Onesto-honest

Onestamente-honestly

Lento-slow

Lentamente-slowly

Solo-alone/lonely

Solamente-only

Exercises:

Change the following adjectives into adverbs.

1. RAPido-rapid.

2. Sincero-sincere-honest.

3. Raro-rare.

Mind that adjectives ending with lo, le and re, ro remove the final -o and add mente.

Sessuale-sexual

Sessualmente-sexually.

Uguale-the same/equal

Ugualmente-equally/anyway

Leggero-light/slight

Leggermente-lightly/slightly

Finally, we have frequency adverbs!

Do you know which ones I'm talking about? Yes, the 'often, rarely, never' etc!

Never-non...mai

Always-sempre

Often-spesso (also meaning 'thick')

Sometimes-a volte

Usually-di SOLito

At times-Qualche volta

Rarely-raramente

These come after the verb and also at the beginning of the sentence:

Bevo sempre acqua frizzante-I always drink fizzy water.

Non va mai al cinema-He never goes to the cinema.

Qualche volta lo vedo in giro-Sometimes I see him around.

Andiamo spesso al teatro-We often go to the theatre.
