In questa lezione imparerete ad usare il comparativo.
In this lesson you will learn how to use the comparative.
****************************************************************
It's so easy!
First of all, let me give you some adjectives, new and old:
bravo/buono-good
cattivo-bad/evil
nuovo-new
vecchio-old
puzzolente-smelly
sporco-dirty
facile-easy
difFIcile-difficult/hard
puLIto-clean
PICcolo-small
Grosso-large/big
Grande-big/great/cool
Carino/a-cute/pretty
Intelligente-intelligent
STUpido-dumb
Those are some adjectives we will be using in this lesson today.
Take a look at this example of what I mean with 'comparative':
Mark is smaller than Bill.
In Italian this becomes:
Marco è più piccolo di Bill.
How FACile is that?
Simply use the copula 'essere', followed by più (more/-er), first element then di (than) followed by compared complement!
So the formula is:
Subject+conjugated verb+più+adjective+di+final element.
Vediamo altri esempi!
Laura è più carina di me.
Laura is prettier than me.
As in English, the final element uses the object pronoun, therefore 'me' and not 'io'.
Io sono più intelligente di te.
I am more intelligent than you. (The you, 'tu' becomes its direct object form, 'te'. All the others remain the same!
di lui
di lei
di noi
di voi
di loro
Make some sentences! Like, I am smellier than him, he's dumber than me lol, give it a try.
But what about if I want to say 'less' than?
Simply replace 'più' with 'meno'.
Io sono meno intelligente di te.
Lui è meno bravo di loro.
ETC.
And to say 'he is as... as...?
Remove both 'più' and 'meno' and add an adjective:
Lui è bravo...
plus 'quanto', meaning 'much' then the pronoun:
Lui è bravo quanto me. He is as good as me.
Negatively?
Lui non è bravo quanto me.
****************************************************
Those are the simple forms of the comparative.
But what if I were to introduce other complements, like 'my', 'yours', 'never'...etc?
Well firstly, let's look at the future, then we'll go on to the second part of the comparative form then the superlative!
Ciao per ora! Bye for now!
