"What?" Jamie says, his voice breaking.
"I don't know what to do. Neither does James." She sobs harder. Jamie runs downstairs.
"Hey, everything will be alright. Can you tell me exactly what happened?"
"Well, James and I were watching TV, and he said he was gonna go check on Hayden. After about a minute he called me in and said she wasn't breathing. I checked to see if she had a pulse still, and she did, but it was really faint and really fast. And then I came up and told you, and I'm sorry we should have had her in there with us."
"It's okay, we'll get through it. I promise. How is James handling it?"
"He said he was really scared." Perfect, that's a great way to calm down your sister in law's eight year old sister. I stroke her hair like I did after the accident until she falls asleep. Jamie walks in with tears streaming down his face.
"She's dead." I feel a lot less than I would have thought.
"I'm so sorry." I don't know how it happened, but I intend to find out. I carry Anna downstairs to her room and close the door, locking it from the inside. I do the same to Jame's room, and tell him not to let her out of his sight tomorrow and wake her up when he gets up. I also slide a note under Anna's door that tells her not to leave her room until James gets her. I walk upstairs. Jamie is really upset, who can blame him.
"I could have been a great dad to her. I was so focused on the mission that I never even picked her up. I went to check on her twice in the whole time we've been together. Why was I so terrible?" He asks this looking at me with tears running down his face.
"You were busy saving three lives." I smile at him. "Life support took care of her for a while. You weren't terrible. I checked on her every night after you went to sleep. She was fine. You couldn't have done anything about it." It's true that i checked on her. Every night. Mostly to remind myself that I still had things to live for. If I weren't alive, she never would have been born. I don't know what that would do to the whole space-time continuum.
"Thank you." This comment startles me, i'm so lost in thought.
"For what?"
"Everything. I couldn't have done any of this without you." This eases my concern. "Come here." I crawl closer to him on the bed and lay my head on his chest. This is how we fall asleep. Even though Hayden is gone, I feel at peace. I have dreams that I had when I was young, when mum and dad were still alive. I was thirteen. 'Don't wander too far off, you'll get lost,' Mum says. 'I won't!' I say in return, looking back to my parents in the field behind my grandma's house. Peace.
~three months later~
"Wheres the coffee?"
"You're too young to drink coffee."
"I'm eleven, I can handle it."
"James, get off that." It makes me smile to hear the brothers argue. It's funny. "What are you laughing at, Jane?" My belly now has a significant bump.
"You two," I say giggling.
"JANE?!?!" Crap.
"WHAT DO YOU WANT, ANNA?" I yell in return. I hate it when she tries to talk to me from downstairs. She rushes up the steps.
"Beth is outside with another gift. "
"OH! Beth!" I stand up in preparation to meet my best friend at the door. "Beth!" I say joyfully. She is the only one who knows where we live. She's been picking up mail and gifts from the old house and bringing it here.
"Jane! How are you?" she says happily.
"I've been better. yourself?"
"Good. Hello Jamie," she says to my husband who is pretending to be asleep.
"You know he likes to aggravate you. " He does, it makes him happy. We talk for about ten minutes before she leaves again. "Take care!"
"You too!" she is gone.
~Five and a half months later~
"Ow, ow ow ow ow ow!" I say as quietly as possible. It's too early for contractions. It isn't quiet enough.
"What's wrong?" Jamie asks me. He always gets concerned with the quietest noises or even faces. "Oh my." I feel it. I look down to see what I fear has happened. I'm right.
"J-Jamie?" I say fearfully. "I think my water just broke..."
