"Hey blondie" Colby smiles, gently ruffling the boys hair as he finally makes his arrival and Sam bites back his smile "hello" he murmurs, gently brushing back his hair.
"I never got the chance to ask; how was that movie? Was it as good as you thought it'd be?" the blonde nods, murmuring a small "yes" in return, allowing the smile to make it's appearance permanently as he can't help but feel happy knowing the other bothered to remember small details again.
Minutes go by and Sam builds the courage to say something "hey- um, I have a question" he says, brows furrowed in slight confusion, turning his head to look at Colby who's eyes are already on him "what's up?" he gives him his attention, ready to hear whatever it is he wants to ask.
"You said you moved from LA?" his head tilts to further express his curiosity and Colby smiles "yeah, I did" the blonde nods once "and when you said you visited your cousins.. did you purposely come here because they were here.. or did you like- live here before?" his words are hesitant as he's scared he'll seem nosey or too pushy, however he doesn't let it stop him from asking, he's trying to tell himself it's okay to express his thoughts around the other.
"Yes- to both, actually. I didn't live in this area specifically but I did live in Kansas when I was younger, I was out in LA since I was 10. We moved back here because of a job offer my mom had got, it just worked out perfect because my parents were already growing annoyed of the busy streets and such, besides, they both grew up here and thought it'd be best to come back since majority of my family are here still."
"Oh.. okay" Sam murmurs, honestly, he thinks it's interesting to learn about Colbys life but he can't help but feel awkward when expected to continue the conversation. Colby doesn't push him for anymore words especially when the bell rings.
Upon grabbing their needed things Colby smiles as he pulls two pencils out of his bag "here," he holds one out to the other and Sam glances at it recognizing it as the pencil he let him borrow weeks ago "I dunno if you still want it back but I forgot to return it before" Sam reaches forward and claims his pencil, looking barely used still "thank you" he lets out, turning back to his work.
His heart thumps steady against his chest, he knows it's a simple thing but he can't help but think Colby is worth trusting even if it's solely based on him returning him his belongings even as little as a pencil. He thinks he should be okay to push himself to be more himself around the other and he's left to wonder how long it will be for him to finally allow himself to do so.
He hopes it's soon.
But, when days go by and not much has changed between their dynamic he loses hope in himself and he can't help but worry Colby is as well. He decides to tell himself it's a test- one that neither wants but it happens, a test that Sam does to get Colby to prove to him he's okay to trust, one that makes his process seem to go slower than normal.
His want to speak to him doesn't get higher at the thought of Colby hating him for taking so long to get to the point, despite thinking that should mean the opposite he can't help but do nothing about it.
"Sam?" Colby speaks, gently nudging him "are you going to answer my question?" He asks, eyes pleading and full of hope but, he just gets a shrug in response. The brunette grumbles, slouching in his seat in defeat, maybe he just needs a different approach.
But what exactly is he doing wrong?
