The air is thin, hushed as it makes its way swiftly through the objects around. Chatter takes its spotlight as it takes on its coarse, only to take it back once disappearing into the vehicles with a thump and an angry roar before their wheels are rotating smoothly against the cracked cement.
The area around becomes almost clear, only a few students sprinkled around either waiting for the traffic to die out as they discuss plans with a friend or waiting to be picked up.
Much like how Sam is now, he's one of the only ones stood near the building, sat against the small wall that barricades the plant bush behind him, shaking gently with the timid wind.
Eyes trained on the road just below him, his eyes trail along the cracks in the dark shade of rock. His trail is blocked by a car pulling up, he lifts his gaze, hope filling his eyes as he wishes it to finally be his ride only for his eyes to fall to Colby who sits in the driver's seat, arm rested against the ledge where the window makes an appearance, he notices he's breaking the rules of the one way area but he doesn't mention it.
"D'you need a ride?" Sam gives him a straight lipped smile, shaking his head gently "you sure? I don't mind taking you home" he tries again, worry filling his eyes as the last student waiting for pick up gets into a car "I'm okay.. my mom should be here soon" he mumbles, eyes falling again because truthfully, his mother hadn't yet answered his texts.
"Well- okay, if you say so," Colby gently taps his car, fingers gently gripped against the door "if you change your mind just give me a text, I'll be happy to come get you, I don't live too far- you did get my number, yes?" Sam nods in confirmation, course he did, Colby put it in himself not long ago "thank you" he whispers, eyes daringly lifting back up to see Colby giving him a friendly smile before his hand is returning to the wheel "see you tomorrow then."
Sam's eyes linger on the car, watching as it gets smaller the farther away it gets, soon, turning out of sight leaving Sam stood alone.
Bodies and cars slowly go one by one, school staff walking by him and giving him a worried look or a goodnight, only a few asking if he'll be okay.
A chill runs up his spine as the wind gets harder, blowing his hair to the side making it swoop in the opposite direction. Head tilting back he finds clouds slowly rolling in, his eyes go wide as he scrambles to grab his phone, pulling up his mother's contact again, thumbs fumbling over the keyboard.
Sam gazes back up when hearing footsteps "oh.. what are you still doing here?" he asks, gaze filled of concern, brows peaking up from the thick rim of his glasses as they scrunch up in confusion. Sam forces up an awkward smile "oh- I uh.. my- my mom will be here soon" he informs the teacher who hums once, looking up "it's going to rain soon," he points out, palm facing up expectantly.
"Do you need me to wait with you? Make sure she gets here safely?" Sam's quick to shake his head "no- no that's okay!" He rushes. The man hums gently, eyes gazing to the open road ahead of them.
Sam's weight shifts between his feet, teeth picking at the skin of his lip, he wishes he'd go or better, his mom showed up. The man sighs, gazing at his watch "legally, I'm not allowed to take you home but if it's really needed I'll be happy to escort you home, I'm the last one here so your not getting another offer, I'd hate to leave you alone in the rain."
The wind pushes him gently almost as if nudging him to say something, raindrop thumping his nose gently "no- no she'll be here in a minute. I promise" he lets out, regret already creeping up at his response "alright," he breathes, gripping the bag in his hand gently "be safe. Have a good night" he murmurs before taking a step towards his car that sits patiently in the parking lot.
He gazes at his phone, panicked tears blurring his vision as he makes his way to call his mother.
Shuffles and soft clatter is heard once the call is answered and Sam's heart drops "mom?" He lets out, the worst coming to mind "wha'?" The slurred word followed by a hiccup makes his face fall "are you- are you drunk?"
