Maya Bishop worked in a secret branch of the CIA. Even more secret than being in the CIA itself.
She and her colleague Jack Gibson, her best friend, had been invited to an interview to receive their next assignment.
They were both in a dark, windowless room in front of a giant screen.
On the other side of the screen, in the half-light, were various people whose faces they couldn't see, some of whose voices had been altered.

-"Agent Bishop, Agent Gibson, it's rare to have two agents in this room at the same time, but you're about to go on your first solo mission on your own, and since you're used to working together, and both your missions will be in Los Angeles, you'll both have the same liaison agent. But before we go any further, please take a look at the screen to discover your assignments. Let's start with you, Agent Bishop".

They had looked at the screen and another person had spoken, a woman.

-"The person you see on the screen is Carina DeLuca. She just arrived a few weeks ago in Los Angeles with her brother. Following the death of their father, Carina took over as head of the Sicilian mafia in Catania. We don't know her next move, but she's had several meetings with various hitwomen, among others, since arriving in LA. Agent Bishop, you're going to have to work your way into her inner circle. All means are good. But beware: her brother Andrea is the most likely not to trust you. He seems to be his sister's right-hand man, and from what we know, if he doesn't have your trust, you won't have hers."

- "all means are good... But maybe don't sleep with her," Jack whispered to his best friend to tease her.

- "as for you Gibson, you're assigned to a mission about Theo Ruiz and his drug cartel..."

-"Don't sleep with him either" replied Maya to her best friend, mocking him.

Once the presentation for Jack was over, the first man had spoken again.

- "so to accompany you and be your liaison officer, you'll have agent Robert Sullivan"

Sullivan, a tall man with a certain presence, had entered the room.

"Agent Robert Sullivan will be your liaison officer, he's based in Los Angeles. You will have telephones where communications will be monitored. It is imperative that you become close to these two individuals. Your missions are not related, but being both in LA, you'll be able to support each other in the event of need.

All three of you can communicate via these phones. Others will be provided for you to use as your everyday telephone. If anything should happen, contact Sullivan. If he is unable to answer, and only then, contact the CIA agency on site and say the alert word 'code battalion'. Is that all right with you?"

- "yes". The three protagonists answered.

Communication was broken off without further conversation.

- "I'm not a babysitter, so if you need to contact me, make sure it's necessary."

- "yes sir" replied the two best friends.

-"Our flight to Los Angeles is at eight o'clock this evening. As soon as you arrive at the airport, none of us will know each other. Until the end of the mission, you can't see each other, and your communications must be via your encrypted phones only. You can write to each other anything you like, but the line is not under surveillance. If you want the conversation to be monitored, start your messages with a star. If it's between you, I'll receive an alert. If you contact me with a star, it will alert our branch".

- "yes sir"

-"Go and pack your bags. We'll see you at the airport at 6.30 p.m. And remember, you're no longer... Whatever you are"
