Maya, Carina and Jack had been a trio of friends since they started secondary school at the age of eleven. Carina had arrived from Italy at the age of ten, and Jack had been placed in a new foster home near the college where Maya would be attending.
The blonde didn't have many friends, as her father had been training her to race since the age of seven. But when these three outsiders found themselves all alone on the first day of school, when they had to form groups, they said to each other, Why not?

Today they were all twenty-four, Maya and Jack had become Firefighters and had been for two years now. Carina, on the other hand, was studying medicine. She had started her residency at Seattle Grace. It was unthinkable for the three friends, who had now been inseparable for thirteen years, to go several days without seeing each other.

Maya had won an Olympic medal at the age of eighteen and had bought herself an apartment; lucky for Carina, it was just a block from her work and she could crash in whenever she had a break. The obstetrics residency was much less intense than her surgical colleagues.

Her colleagues included Ryan. Ryan was Carina's boyfriend. Well, no, her fiancé. They'd met when they were eighteen and had gone to medical school together. They lived in the same city without knowing it.

Ryan was also familiar with the fire department, as his best friend Andy was a station captain's daughter. They'd known each other all their lives, having grown up next door to each other.

Maya and Jack worked at Station 19 under the command of Lucas Ripley. Pruitt Herrera was captain of Station 23, under whose command he also had his daughter Andy, Ryan's best friend.

Andy, Jack and Maya had gone to the same academy here in Seattle. They hadn't necessarily the same friends, but Gibson and Bishop had felt a little obliged to sympathize a little more with Andy because they knew she was best friends with Ryan, their best friend's boyfriend.

At the age of fourteen, Maya had come out to her two best friends. Jack had been a little disappointed, finding the blonde so incredible that he could have imagined himself dating her. He'd realized years later that it was mostly admiration he had for her. He hadn't had any parents of his own, really his own, since birth, and she had crappy ones. Maybe her situation was better, but in his eyes, she was the bravest, the strongest person he knew.
It probably had something to do with the fact that he'd been running his whole life, and yet, Maya beat him to the punch every time.

For Carina, it hadn't been a problem either. At the age of fifteen, after Maya's coming out, she had wondered about herself. She found Maya very beautiful, more and more so as she got to know her, and had used a first date, the first of her life with a boy, as an excuse to ask her best friend if they could practice kissing together.

So they kissed, once, in a simple way. Then they did it again until they were comfortable enough to exchange a real kiss, one with tongue.
However, nothing more had ever happened, and Carina had never been with a girl.

Of course, there had been times when they'd had to kiss again, while playing games, or on the New Year's Eve before their eighteenth birthday, when they'd had their first binge, at midnight to wish each other a happy new year, because they'd had no one else to kiss on the lips, a few months before Carina met Ryan.
But never anything more.

Maya dated girls, lots of girls. Jack dated girls, he was more the type to want to find the girl who would offer him a stable life and for Carina, she had been with Ryan for six years and engaged for eight months.

- "okay, so you're sure I can come to this bachelorette party?"

-"Jack, you're one of my two best men, and you're my best friend, so of course you can come... Besides, Maya's going to need you to organize it!"
