Maya had entered the hospital room while her wife, Carina, was breastfeeding their daughter, who had been born the day before.

-"I don't think I'll ever get used to this vision, you're perfect".

-"ciao Bambina. We missed you. We didn't expect you back so soon".

-"I asked the battalion chief if I could take the afternoon off because I missed the two women of my life and the man of my life, and I wanted to see them at all costs".

- "Is Andy okay?"

- "Very well, she's enjoying herself immensely in this new battalion role, Pruitt would have been proud of her."

- "and she was okay with her new captain already taking an afternoon off after only two weeks, with parental leave coming up on top of it?"

- "she knew it was very important."

- "and how do you feel about leaving the barracks in the middle of a shift?"

- "Amore, I don't think I have to prove myself to you anymore today, to show you that our family, you, come before my job. It's been four years now. I'm much better, strangely enough, since I almost lost you. I know what's important in my life. I'm happy to have my captaincy back, but you, Andrea and Charlie are my priority."

- "by the way, where's Andrea ?"

- "He's still at daycare. I absolutely wanted to come and kiss you before I went to pick him up, because I know that when he gets here, I won't be able to get near you anymore"

- "so what are you waiting for to come and kiss your wife?"

- "I'm sorry, Doctor DeLuca", said Maya, approaching the brunette.

- "it's Doctor DeLuca-Bishop" Carina whispered against her lips before kissing her.

- "I don't like sleeping in our bed without you" replied Maya against her lips in return, before kissing Charlie's head, who was still suckling at her mamma's breast.

-"Where did Andrea sleep last night?"

- "in your place..."

- "bambina!"

- "what?! ... he snores like you... it comforts me"

- "I don't snore!" she said outraged.

-"No, you're right, it's more like an endearing little purr".

- "go get my son! Adesso!"

- "how bossy you are, Doctor DeLuca-Bishop" replied Maya, bringing her lips close to those of her wife. "Ti amo per sempre, you know that?!"

Carina had brought her free hand up and caressed her wife's cheek.

- "per sempre capitano DeLuca-Bishop"

Maya had left the room after stealing one last kiss from her wife and daughter.
The Italian had watched her leave and thought back to a few years ago when they'd almost parted, she'd had to have Maya committed against her will; and the blonde had won back her heart little by little, and more intensely than the first time.

Then she'd thought back to that time, before the firefighthers's ball, when they'd talked about the IVF procedure and Andrea's arrival in their lives a few months later.

They'd almost adopted the child of the woman who'd died that night, the one from the ballroom collapse, but Maya knew how important it was for Carina to carry life.
They went to the best IVF specialist in Seattle and a few months later, Andrea was born. They had called on a donor with blue eyes like Maya, but dark hair like Carina, with Italian and American origins, intelligent but athletic, this man on paper, was perfect.
