Carina DeLuca was a successful writer. She already had several books to her credit.
However, her latest project was dragging on. It had been eight months since she'd managed to write anything to her satisfaction. Her editor, Victoria Hughes, had given her an ultimatum. She had to deliver a first draft of at least four chapters of her next book within the next four months, or she'd have to return the deposit she'd received for her next book several months ago. The trouble was, there wasn't much left of this advance, as she had to pay her rent, among other things.
She lived in Los Angeles, but nothing inspired her.
-"Carina, I love you, bella, but I don't know what to tell the big bosses. They want a first draft of your next book."
- "I know... I just... I can't write anymore... Sometimes I sit in front of my computer and stare at it for hours and nothing comes out..."
- "meet people... Your best stories were written when you..."
- "when what ? when I was «in love» ? at least as a couple."
- "yes..."
- "yes, well, I have the right to want to remain single... I'm sick and tired of one-night stands and unrequited love affairs..."
- "no one wants to read a depressing book, sweetheart... Besides... You can see it's not working for you... You can't even get a line out...".
-"L.A. is the problem..."
- "you think?"
- "When I was in Paris, I wrote a story that did well; when I was at home in Catania, the same... When I was in Seattle for a while too... And then a year ago I wrote this last book here... But I don't know... Los Angeles no longer inspires me... In a manner of speaking, but I feel like I've « done the tour of the girls » here..."
-"You're the idol of young queers and older... They want your books... You could write your shopping list and they'd want to read it ...
Go out... Meet girls..."-"I'd like to find the woman who would inspire each of my books, not just one... The one who... Would... Make me forget all the other girls... I don't want... « women »... And I think I really need a different environment... I can't stand the city anymore... I want fresh air, I want to be able to wake up and go outside and have the emptiness for miles around."
-"You want me to rent you an Airbnb in the middle of Montana? A ranch, what could be more relaxing than that?" asked Vic hesitantly, not sure she understood what her writer was looking for.
- "a ranch?"
-"Nature... And who knows, maybe you'll meet a pretty cowgirl to fill your next pages".
- "Yeah, I'm not sure it's the kind of place I could fall in love with... But I'm willing to give it a try... Maybe the hustle and bustle of L.A. just isn't for me. After all, I can write from anywhere in the world... I came here because there was the publishing house, but I don't think I'm cut out to stay in one place."
-"Okay, trust me. Let me plan your trip. I'll start with... One month? Or two?"
- "One month... I don't need to go and bury myself somewhere full of testosterone."
- "okay, any restrictions?"
- "no, let me just pack..."
- "great, sweetie. You go home, pack and I'll send you the details later today".
- "Thanks Vic"
- "Don't think it's unselfish... If you write a book, as publisher, I'll have my share of the cake..."
