Carina DeLuca was a twenty-eight-year-old who was about to make a lifelong dream come true. At 781 Americana Way in Glendale, California, she would finally be able to open her own restaurant and deli, DeLuca's Italian Deli.
From an early age, she had worked hard to make this day a reality. She started working odd jobs at an early age, enrolled in a cooking school back home in Italy and saved every Euro she earned, so that one day she'd have the chance to open her own restaurant.
She had chosen Los Angeles as a tribute to her mother, who had died three years ago now, and she had always wanted to take her children to see California. Lucia herself had lived there for a few years during her studies at UCLA, before having Carina and her brother, but had never had the chance to set foot there again until she died of cancer the year she turned twenty-five.
Today was the last step before the opening of her restaurant and delicatessen. She was due to receive a visit from the fire department to check that her fire-fighting equipment was up to standard.
She reported to Station 19, located at 405 Oak Street in Glendale, just a two-minute drive from her restaurant.
Maya Bishop was on call, which she didn't like, but she'd been put on inspections today. This wasn't the mission she'd joined the fire department for. What she wanted to do was fight fires, but as she was in the running for captaincy, she had to comply with Captain Sullivan's every demand, especially as Colonel Ripley himself had asked Maya to do the rounds because he knew she was meticulous.
She had the right to choose who she wanted to accompany her, and if she had to do something she didn't necessarily like, she might as well take someone she did like, to make the day at least enjoyable. She could have taken her best friend Jack, but as they were both lieutenants, that wasn't possible.
So, as Vic was assigned to reception, due to her recent return to work following an electrocution and the fact that she had to take it easy on her heart, Maya decided to bring her along. After all, doing fire safety check-ups wasn't going to get her friend's heart racing, and on top of that, it would take her mind off things.
-"Thank you for getting me out of there. I think I would have spent another day at the front desk, I would have ended up murdering."
-"You're welcome. But you know it's only one day, you'll go back to reception tomorrow. And besides, we only have four visits today".
-"I work short shifts... Please let's hang out on each of those tours. We'll tell Captain Sullivan that you showed me how you do inspections, you're the most meticulous, and since you've applied to take his place, we need someone to replace you... This is not a mission for a captain".
