CHAPTER ONE

"don't worry, starik, i'll be safe"
ANGELIQUE LE CLOSED her eyes as she tipped the glass back, savoring the cold, nectarous taste of rum as it slid across her tongue. Her slender fingers set the empty glass back down as she sighed, letting the alcohol seep in.
That was her third.
If she was in Sea Point, Mikhail would have warned her to slow down. And he would have been right. It wasn't wise to addle her mind with spirits when she was about to meet with her next client.
And so, ensuingly, Angelique picked herself up. The hinges creaked loudly as she pushed the door open and strode out of the dingy bar. Five kruge was left in her stead.
Outside, the day was dreary and the cobbled streets were slick from the rain, but still the people in the Barrel went about their business like usual.
Ladies of the night lured drunken men into their brothels, dressed in silk scraps like whispered promises. Merchants and food vendors pushed desperately for a chance to sell their goods or service. Beggars and orphans scrounged and stole whatever they could get their dirtied hands on.
Being on the streets always reminded her of the same thing. In this place, you either barely get by or live in luxury. There was rarely an in-between. But that didn't change her affection toward the capital city of Kerch.
Angelique loved Ketterdam.
She loved how it was one big cultural pot. How it was surrounded by water, how there was always a canal near. How morals ceased to exist, but debauchery and corruption thrived at an all-time high. Especially here in the Barrel. Oh, without the Barrel, with its gangs and their power game, with rivalry running as its lifeblood... she wouldn't even make half the kruge she did now.
For some, living here was a nightmare, but it suited a person like Angelique just fine.
Currently, from the small bar she walked out of, she was between the East Stave and the West Stave, the major canals that bracketed the place. She stuck along the West Stave, going northwest toward the Lid.
The Lid was the tourist part of the Barrel. For that reason everything there was far more extravagant, better to attract the foreigners. There, you would find the best betting halls, the best pleasure houses, and the best tavern in all of Ketterdam. The Sea Point. Otherwise known as her current residence in Ketterdam and where she was heading.
