CHAPTER FOUR

"what? no? very well. the name's sturmhond"
AFTER A NIGHT OF rowdy laughter and drinking at a small tavern nearby, Nikolai had been exhausted. He had wanted nothing more than to go back to his ship and fall asleep on his bed.
But of course, he couldn't. Not with his unfinished business.
Nikolai walked in the dimly lit room, his face kept neutral and aloof like any regular bodyguard as he went to stand off to the side.
Dreesen would be conducting matters for now.
"Ten minutes, alone," Dreesen said to one of the three stadwatch who brought in Brekker and his sharpshooter. He held out a generous amount of kruge. "Out you go."
The man eagerly took the fat wad of cash and waved at the rest his companions to follow him out. They exited the room, shutting the door after them.
Now that that was dealt with, the merchant put up a show of looking crossed as he appraised the two Crows. "So," he said, "are you going to tell me what happened?"
Jesper Fahey, ever the joker, shrugged. "We've been framed for murder?"
Dreesen scoffed, his grey mustache jumping at the movement. "I'm not asking about that. Where is Alina Starkov?"
They both stayed silent.
Kaz kept his eyes ahead, not even looking at Dreesen. In fact, he was barely focusing on the conversation the man was trying to have with him at all. Instead, Kaz seemed to be surveying the office room, his sharp brown eyes taking in everything.
"We don't have her," Kaz replied finally, his gaze still darting around the office.
"Obviously," Dreesen said brusquely. He began to speak through his teeth. "You left with an advance on my million kruge with passage on my ship. And you dare to return empty-handed? The deal was meant to include one Sun Summoner in exchange for the advance."
Meanwhile, Brekker's eyes landed on Nikolai, assessing him with an intensity. Nikolai tried not to stiffen at the sudden attention.
"Yet you step off the ship with no such person in your possession," Dreesen continued. "Clearly you must have something of value to me or else you would not have dared—"
