How could this be happening? Wesley hadn't felt this way in years. It took less than twelve hours Back Home to re-ignite a fire that was put out before it really got to burn.
Wesley and Fletch were on their third day of being flooded in the cabin. The rain hasn't stopped, and the lake hasn't been this high since before Wesley was born.
"Should we be concerned about how close the water is getting to the cabin?" Wesley voiced her concern to Fletch.
Looking out at where the pier is now fully submerged in the lake, Fletch put her hands on her hips.
"Well, I am not sure. I have never seen it this high. Let's just pray the el-"
Right as Fletch said it, there was a loud crack followed by darkness.
"That's wonderful." Wesley said.
Wesley reached out for Fletch but couldn't find her in the darkness.
"Fletch?"
Nothing.
"Fletch!"
She was quickly greeted with a bright light.
"I'm right here, baby." She handed Wesley a flashlight. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I just couldn't find you. It was dark."
"Are you still-" Fletch asked but was interrupted by Wesley.
"Yes!"
"It's okay, Wes."
Wesley was 29 years old and should have grown out of this fear, but she hadn't. She was afraid of the dark. Fletch knew she was and did not make fun of her for it.
Wesley had quickly gotten over the fact that she was stuck in a cabin with her ex for God knows how long. But now she was stuck in a cabin, with her ex, with no electricity.
"Fletch, I don't think I can do this."
"Do what, Wes?"
"Be here. Stuck in this cabin with you. Stuck in the dark." Wesley was on the brink of crying.
"Here," Fletch guided Wesley to the couch. "Sit here. I will be back in just a minute."
Fletch hurried out the front door.
Wesley sat on the couch waiting but she didn't know what for. She was by herself in the dark with only a flashlight and her thoughts.
What was she doing? She spent years getting past everything that happened with Fletch and she gave in with a single text.
She felt the tears start to roll down her cheeks. She was back and forth with how she felt about the situation, and she didn't know what to do. Fletch had changed and she could see that. Her words were genuine, and her actions backed them up.
The lights flickered then came back on.
Wesley quickly wiped her tears and stood up to go find Fletch.
Before she reached the door it opened and Fletch appeared.
Fletch was drenched. She immediately took notice of Wesley's watery eyes and took her face in her hands.
"Hey, what's wrong?"
Wesley placed her hands over Fletch's and leaned into her.
"I don't know what I am doing."
"What do you mean, Wes?"
"I keep second guessing myself. I don't know if this is a good idea." Wesley gestured her finger between the two of them.
