Eggman's howls of laughter can just barely be heard over the continuous gunfire erupting from the rifle-shaped Volkan cannon on the front of his Eggwalker. A round machine with enough room for him to comfortably sit and control. Attached to its underside are two large, mechanical legs.
Crossing the bridge leading into the facility proved to be no issue. With the combined might of ariel badniks, an army of SWATbots, and the undisputed strength of Team Dark, every effort made by the intercepting GUN Hunters proved futile. Above, every GUN Beetle deployed was promptly shot down and eviscerated on impact, thanks to the superb accuracy of the countering buzz bombers.
Now past the holding area, the resourceful doctor and his forces continue their invasion inside the massive facility's left wing. On both sides of the massive grey corridor are jail cells housing rather rowdy inmates. Some even beg for their freedom, but their cries are ignored by the egg-shaped tyrant currently too occupied with his own goals.
Ahead, on the opposite end of the sector are a battalion of brave GUN soldiers taking cover behind their mechanical comrades. Each of them wears blacked-out uniforms equipped with ballistic black helmets, and white visors shrouding the upper half of their faces. Their loadouts consist of the same thing. Heavy machine guns as weighty as their name and size suggests. Though, their long, high-caliber barrels more than make up for it.
Even with heavy firepower and a row of opposing GUN Hunters on their side, the soldiers hardly affect the approaching intruders. Flooding half the prison hall and showing no shortage of gained ground, the SwatBots pin down the opposition with their arm cannons continuously dispersing small beams of red, burning energy.
Any GUN Hunter that breaks formation in an attempt to line up a better shot is swiftly obliterated by E-123 Omega's Gatling guns. Shadow stands to the robot's side, arms folded, left with no option but to study the chaos unfolding before him.
High up, in front of the second floor of housed inmates, Rouge works alongside nearby badniks to hold off any and all GUN drones. While they may be fast, none of them can acquire the speed necessary to avoid Rouge's mid-air kicks. Majestically, the bat flies through the space of crowded robots and gunfire to destroy all nearby enemies.
Reveling in the mayhem, Eggman looks down at the layers of switches and levers before him and begins controlling a second handle.
"THIS IS NOTHING!" he boasts, positioning the lock-on missile launcher attached to the rear of the cockpit at the barrier of GUN defenses. "YOU WANT MORE? HOW ABOUT THIS?!"
One of the remaining soldiers yet to have fallen victim to a stray beam of a SWATbot or the power of the Doctor's Volkan canon lowers her weapon in shock. Realizing what's about to happen, she dives for the floor.
"GET DOWN!" she screams.
The other human soldiers lucky enough to hear their ally's barely audible warning takes to the floor themselves, right before a missile blasts through the air, turning what was once a line of GUN Hunters into a loud, explosive display of raining metal. The blast knocks the few remaining soldiers backward, three of them having a hard wall end their short flight.
Once the dust settles, what's left of the defensive line of GUN forces is no more. In its place are burn marks staining the dark grey floor, pieces of metal that once belonged to machines varying in size and color, and several unconscious humans. Those who didn't survive the onslaught of firepower only have their cracked helmets and fallen machine guns as proof of their existence.
"Oh, how it's great to be back!" Eggman announces, proudly admiring the handy work in front of him.
Shadow looks at the broken defense, disturbed at the sight in front of him. While he holds no remorse for the loss of GUN soldiers, still, a life is a life. And several have just come to a premature end, thanks to Eggman's sinister machinery. Eyeing Shadow's discomfort, the Doctor grins.
"You're growing soft on me, Shadow," he says, catching a disinterested stare from the ultimate lifeform. "So is the rest of your team. So I tell you what, if you have a problem with how I do things, I'll leave the rest up to you."
With a parting smile, Eggman's cockpit disengages from the Eggwalker's legs, leaving them to crash to the floor. Shadow's eyes widen as the hovering Eggmobile flies down the corridor at high speed.
"NO YOU DON'T!" Shadow barks, reeling his hand back. "CHAOS SPE- URGH!"
Shadow falls to one knee, coughing violently. Evidently, he's barely begun to recover his full strength. He watches with a cocked brow as Eggman disappears upon making a sharp left down the hallway.
"Damn it!" he slams a fist on the ground. "How'd he figure us out? It doesn't matter. I need to pursue-!"
"ENEMIES UP AHEAD!"
The voice of a male GUN soldier catches the hedgehog's undivided attention. He, his teammates, and the remaining SwatBots turn around, facing enemy reinforcements flooding from the front entrance. Approaching footsteps from behind indicate they're all about to be sandwiched.
"We don't have time for this!" Shadow says, managing a weak stand. "We can't lose that emerald!"
Despite his priorities, the ultimate lifeform knows Eggman's victory shouldn't be the first thing on his mind. For now, his very survival is in jeopardy.
