Soulmate au

Word count: 1504

"Do I have to?" You groaned as your mother practically dragged you out of the car. Your brother snickered at you as she did so. He was almost ten years older than you, still living in your parents' basement, lonely with no soulmate. And still, he thought he was better than you.

"Yes, y/n, you do." She dug her nails into your arm, dangerously close to your tattoo, as she dragged you behind her, beginning to walk up to the school's front gates. You tried to plant your heels in the ground, but the cement proved stronger than you had hoped, and your mother pushed on.

You didn't have the best relationship with your family; they had always favored your brother and never supported you. You were sure this would have gotten better the older the two of you got, and the more of a disappointment he proved to be, but you were wrong. The only thing they saw you as was a monster.

"Why do I have to go here?" You grumbled as your mother continued to drag you along, other kids beginning to stare. You knew exactly why, but you just wanted to hear her say it out loud. She had cheated on your father, so technically, your brother was only your half-sibling. But you were her biggest regret.

"This is a school for freaks, you'll fit right in." She hissed, not caring about the fact that she was your mom, and moms were supposed to love their kids no matter what. "I mean, come on y/n, you really think being able to turn into a spider is normal?"

What your mother didn't know about your biological father, was that he was a 'freak' and could turn into any animal he wanted, so now you had that same ability. The problem was, you had only ever been able to turn into a tarantula, the rest of your power proving hard for you to master.

"Normal? Nah. Cool? Totally." The woman just scoffed as you spoke. The one thing your mother hated more than you, was the fact that you didn't try to convince her to love you. You didn't beg and plead for her to accept you. You just moved on with your life.

"Let's just get this over with so I can leave." She spat as she walked into the large school, heading straight for what seemed to be the front office. A tall bright-haired woman quickly greeted the two of you.

"Well hello, I am Principal Weems, who might you be?"

After some quick registration paperwork, and placing you in a dorm with a girl named Yoko, your mom disappeared without so much as a goodbye.

"Alright ladies, it is almost lights out, so get settled in and we will get your classes figured out in the morning." Weems smiled as she shut the door softly, the sound of her heels clacking away from the room.

"So, I'm Yoko, I'm a vampire, hence the shades." The girl smirked, pointing to the sunglasses residing on her face. She then pointed to her half of the room, decked out in goth decor, complete with a coffin. "What is your freakish ability?"

You wanted to call yourself a shapeshifter, but you didn't feel like you had fully earned the title since you had only ever turned into one thing. So, you decided it would just be better to show her than tell her.

Within a split second, your perspective fell to the floor, Yoko taking a quick step back before kneeling down. She inspected your small form for a few moments before standing up, giving you a nod that told you to return back to human form. As soon as you were back to 'normal' she spoke.

"Spider. Cool." As these words left her mouth you couldn't help but grin. You had never been in a situation where anyone would describe your situation as 'cool', in fact, you were always a 'monster' or 'sick' so this was amazing to hear. Before you could respond to her there was a quick knock on the door, it swinging open before either of you could respond.

"Yoko, you will not believe-" A girl walked in, her hair blonde with hints of pink and blue, her bubbly personality obvious before she had really spoken. "Oh em gee! I'm so sorry! I wouldn't have barged in if I knew you had a new roomy!"

"It's okay," You smiled as she walked farther into the room. She was very colorful and had a huge smile on her face. "Im y/n." You extended your hand for her to shake and she quickly ran forward, taking your arm and pulling you into a hug instead.

"Im Enid, it is awesome to meet you!" She then backed up and finally shook your hand, your eyes darting to each other's tattoos. Hers was a small crescent moon with a snake wrapped around it. Yours was a dagger, but instead of a blade, it was a feather. "Oh..." She mumbled, a smirk on her face.

"What?" You asked, immediately pulling your arm away from hers and looking at your wrist where the small tat resided. She just looked at Yoko, you, and then back at Yoko.

"Our roomies are going to get along."

Enid had left soon after that introduction, the rain beginning to fall. And after an hour or so of you and Yoko learning about each other, she sat down at her desk and drew while you attempted to get some sleep.

But with the mixture of her scribbling, the rain outside, and your nervousness to meet new people, you could not sleep at all. You tossed and turned for close to two hours, your mind racing with what Enid might have meant earlier.

"Im gonna go get some air, ill be right back." You said as you stood up from your bed, slipping on your jacket and some shoes. Yoko just sent a thumbs-up your way and continued to do whatever she was doing.

You cracked the window open and the cool night air hit your skin, the smell of rain filling your senses. You climbed out and realized the ledge you were standing on was much more slippery than you had anticipated. As you regained your footing, you decided it would be best to find somewhere else to sit.

You turned as much as you could and noticed a ledge just a bit higher than your head, reaching your arms up and grabbing on, pulling yourself up quickly. You just needed a quiet spot to think for a few minutes, so as you made it onto the ledge, you stood, wanting to walk farther back, but something scared you.

No, not something... someone.

It was a girl wearing all black, her hair in strategic, almost perfect braids. You weren't expecting to see anyone on the roof, let alone anyone so pretty, so you couldn't help it when you took a few steps back, forgetting about the ledge.

She hopped up with a speed you had never seen before and quickly grabbed your hand in hers, her feet planting into the ground. But something happened that neither of you ever expected.

As you looked down at the hand that had saved you from certain death, you saw a tattoo that looked all too familiar. In fact, it was the same tattoo you have had on your body your whole life. You knew the girl had noticed the same thing you did, because her death grip loosened, your hand slipping from hers.

As your body cut through the cold air below you, you realized one thing... nothing was stopping you from hitting the concrete 300 feet down. You could see the quick flash in her eyes before she moved forward again, swinging her arm out to grab you, but gravity was quicker.

Your whole life you had feared that you would never find your soulmate, and if you did, they wouldn't accept you because of your 'condition' But now that you found her, and not only was she beautiful, she was a weirdo, like you, you weren't gonna die now.

You closed your eyes and thought of every time your family told you that you weren't enough, you conjured up every emotion you could possibly think of and spread your arms out wide, hoping this would work.

And whether it was fate or pure luck, you suddenly felt it, your wings flapping in the wind. You didn't waste any time and just landed on the nearest surface you saw, turning quickly back into a human.

As you looked up at the ledge where you had just been, you saw no one, not even a trace that anyone had been there. As you caught your breath and tried not to cry, you had two questions racing through your mind.

Who was this girl...

and how soon could you see her again?
