Chapter One:

"Happy birthday to you our dear Avalon!" My parents sang as they were bringing out a cake which read 'We love you Ava!' Written in my favourite colour across the top. Lime green. My mother, Angeline, sang beautifully. My father, Gerald, does not sing so well. Gerald has greying black hair and blue eyes while Angeline has curly blonde hair and brown eyes.

I was on the phone talking to Jemmy, my best friend. She laughed on the phone "Oooh hey I gotta go Jemmy! Love you booboo!" I put down the house phone and smiled up at my parents. The cake, as I may have already said, is quite lovely. It got even more lovely when my father grabbed the cake knife and began to slowly cut me a piece. "I love you guys so much, you know that right?" I yelled jumping up and down. "No, we thought that you hated us!" My mom joked while rolling her eyes at my silly comment. "What your mother was trying to say is that...You better love us because if you don't, too bad!" I am so glad that father already put my cake down on the table, because I don't think it would have survived if it went on the ground with my father laughing like he is. Smiling I put the fork with cake up to my mouth and savoured the chocolatey flavour. I'm not allowed to eat chocolate (actually anything with sugar) a lot because mother says that whatever I eat is going to go straight to my bum. "So how does it feel to be eighteen now? Hmmm?" Mother asked as she slowly walked past me and towards the kitchen. My smile brightened as I began to talk. "It feels amazing mother! And this cake is heavenly, thank you so much!" She laughed as she pushed the kitchen door open and came back out with her laptop in hand walking up the stairs. "Goodnight darling. I am going to my office, do not disturb me while I am working." Sighing I nod my head towards my mother and smile at my dad. He had finally gotten his bearings and was standing beside my cake yawning. "Father, you can go to bed now if you'd like." I spoke quietly as not to disobey mother's order. Father nodded his head, smiling at me he gave me a huge hug and walked up the stairs. "Well, it's" I paused to look at my watch. It's old and breaks sometimes, but I love it. "11:30. I think that maybe I will invite Jemmy over." I picked up the home phone about to dial Jemmy's number when I heard my mother's urgent voice speaking. "Yes I know it is her eighteenth birthday today. No, nothing has happened. Everything is okay. Maybe she won't change, you know? Maybe she will be like her father. Yes I know that there is a chance that-" She paused for a moment almost like she could sense me listening. Then continued. "Someone's listening to this conversation. I have to go, bye!" And I put the phone down quickly feeling my nerves rise up. "Mom was talking about me." I whispered to myself. Panicking I ran to a mirror and scanned over the girl I saw staring back at me. My image was a bit blurry, but I must be getting tired. I saw a girl with straight black hair, amber eyes, and worry written across her face. Nothing seemed to be wrong with me though. "Mom may have just been joking around." I said laughing nervously. Yeah, whatever Avalon, you know that she wasn't. Gah! I hate arguing with myself! It gives me a headache. Groaning I head over to the kitchen and pull out a painkiller for my new headache. I'm just going to sing now, you know? To get my mind off of what my mom said. I wonder who she was talking to, ah who cares? Well, I kind of care.

"How can you see into my eyes like open doors" I sing walking back into the living room and picking up my cake. "Leading you down into my core where I've become so numb" Putting the cake in the fridgerator. "Without a soul my spirit sleeping somewhere cold until you find it there and lead it back home" Went back to grab my plate and put it in the sink. "Wake me up! Wake me up inside! I can't wake up!" I sang as loud and quietly as I could. "And that was part of Bring Me to Life by Evanescence ladies and gentlemen, sung by the one and of course the only Avalon Angel Moore!" Laughing at myself narrating. Finally I was through cleaning up and I scurried up stairs to my room. Let me describe my room to you. Sadly, my mom let the housekeeper decide what my room would look like because apparently Matilda has more 'wise decision making skills' than I do. My walls are a light pink shade, the floor is covered in a cheesy flowery rug, my window sills are painted a darker shade of pink, and my bed is probably the worst of all. It is hot pink with a neon blue cover, bright yellow pillows, and looks like a rainbow peed all over it. Basically, I hate my room but I never really show it. "Hello my barf-ified room! How are you tonight? Obviously you are sick because you seem to be covered in rainbow pee." Woohoo! I really have lost my mind, maybe I never had it in the first place. Who knows? I quickly brush my teeth, comb my hair, jump on my bed, and doze off listening to the sounds of my little radio beside my bed playing My Immortal by Evanescence. "Goodnight nobody in particular." I whisper letting my voice drift throughout the room.

"Hum dum dee dum dum dum da dee dum. I don't know the re-est of this so-ong." I sang out loud as I pull my clothes on and put my school things in my backpack. It is a Monday today and I am not really looking forward to it. Coach Leroy, my french teacher is giving us a test today. On a Monday! I mean, who does that stuff? Obviously Coach Leroy does...but whatever! "Ava you are going to have a good day today despite the fact that Coach Leroy is seriously being too harsh, for 1st period too. Be happy, live happy!" I chirped happily getting my perkiness back. Perkiness? Huh. That is a funny word.

My outfit for today consists of my black shirt that says peace in silver sparkly letters on the front, my red skinny jeans that look like little waves of fabric going down my legs, and my black combat boots. Yeah I know, my mother would never approve of this look because she says other people will think that I am goth what with my black hair also. People can think what they want to but I know that I am not and never will be goth. My friend Logan is goth though. We met at Walmart actually and it is a very strange story from then on.

Everything was ready for school and all I had to do now was to use the curling iron to add a bit of wave to the bottom of my hair and brush my teeth. My teeth kind of hurt this morning and I am not sure why. What mother said on the phone last night still lingered in the back of my mind but like I said before, I am going to have a good day today. And... I get to show up today as an 18 year old! Woohoo! My Freedom book bag lay splayed across my bed and I put my phone in the front pocket checking the time. "6:48. School starts at eight so I have time." I yank my iPod off of my dresser and press play to Firework by Katy Perry. I like a variety of music. Honestly there may be no boundaries to my kind of music. May be. The song began to play as I swung my hips to the beat and walked into my bathroom. My eyes were closed and I was really getting into the song. Shooting toothpaste onto my toothbrush I put it up to my mouth like a microphone and sung a little bit louder. Katy paused for a moment so I opened my eyes, smiling brightly as I was about to brush my teeth. I closed my eyes again quickly. "What the heck? No no no no no. Please Jesus tell me I did not just see that. Am I still asleep? Yeah! I have to be. And so when I open my eyes I will be...ok?" I could have promised you I just saw something really weird. My eyes shot open again and I smiled looking at my teeth. Then I screamed.
