We break the treeline just as a sound like no other rings out. A terrible, grinding sound. Rock against rock. Then I realize, the walls are moving. I don't show my utter awe at the thought of these walls defying all laws of physics. Instead I just say,"what the hell." The doors close with a bang. I instantly wonder what's out there? Why do they close? Are they protecting us from something? We continue our earlier decided mission of getting food like everyone else was. After we get our food, I decide to take a leap am plop myself right down next to the cute blond guy. Lizzy thinks for a moment then sits next to me and it begin to eat. I decide to make a conversation. "So," I eat another bite of the mashed potatoes on my plate and wave my fork as I speak for emphasis. This earns me a smile from the cute guy next to me. "What is this place. And what's your name?" I look around.
"Name's Newt, greenie. And this," he makes a circle motion with his fork, gesturing to the place,"is The Glade. It's where we live," then he adds,"for now."
"We're trapped in here aren't we," Lizzy says. It's more of a statement, not a question. Before Newt has a chance to respond, Lizzy's boy-crush walks over to our table.
"What exactly happened earlier?" he asks.
"Well," Newt starts,"these two come up in The Box. Alice unconscious and Lizzy leanin' over her cryin'-" The Asian guy cuts him off.
"Crying?"
"I thought she was dead, okay?" Lizzy says, blushing. She soooo likes him. The Asian guy looks down and chuckles. Return of interest confirmed.
"I jump down in and she scrambles out and bloody runs into the woods. Alice tells us their names and we go after this shuck-face." Newt pauses,"We find her up in a tree and Gally tries to climb it but she jumps out the bloody thing and runs off, running into to you and you know the rest."
"You jumped out of a shuck tree?" the Asian guy asks, his eyebrows raising. Definitely impressed. Noted!!
"Why, yes" Lizzy jokes. I laugh lightly and roll my eyes. They end up starting a bonfire and everyone is laughing and joking around. It brought back a faint memory, the smell of the wood, the heat of the fire, but I couldn't remember where or with whom. It was all really frustrating.
"Wait, are we trapped in here?" I ask Newt.
"We are, yes but we're gonna find a way out of here. That's why everyone has to do their part. We all are working together to get out of this bloody nut house." His words are strong and inspiring with just the right amount of humor to top it off. He was amazing even with words. I realize my sister is deep in thought, her hands on her head.
"The Asian guy is the first to pipe up. "Woah, greenie, don't think too hard." Lizzy shakes her head and apologizes. Suddenly, Gally comes swaggering over to us like he's the biggest deal ever. He eyes me, scanning my body, taking extra long on my unmentionables. Newt seems to notice and I see him tense. Is it possible he likes me. Probably not.
"Hey, beautiful," he says, standing in front of me. I crack my knuckles behind my back.
"Well, hello, Potato-Face," I say putting all the sass I can into his new name. The Asian guy and Newt both chuckle. Newt glances at me briefly. This seems to annoy Potato-Face. He grabs my wrist and I'm about to break away and snap his neck when Lizzy interjects.
"Hey!" she says, easily whipping his hand off of mine. I can see Newt out of the corner of my eye, his fists are clenched and he looks like he's about to kill Gally. "Keep your hands off of her!" my sister puts extra warning when saying off. She knows I can take care of myself. Newt walks between Gally and I blocking me from his view, facing him. His voice is loud enough I can still hear it.
"Take a step back, Gally," Newt says. His voice is tense.
"Why should I," Potato-Face says,"it's not like she's your girlfriend." Well damn do I wish.
The Asian comes in next,"Woah, shank, it's not like she's yours either."
I can't take it any more. "Stop talking like I'm not here!" I snap. Newt moves to the side, giving me a clear view of Gally. I walk up to him, pointing a finger accusingly at his chest. "You better stay the fuck away from me!" He just shakes his head and walks away. I feel like breaking something.
"He's an idiot," I hear my sister say.
"That slinthead thinks he knows everything," the Asian says. Slinthead?
He sits next to Lizzy.
"So, where are we sleeping tonight?" I say. I'm nervous about going to sleep honestly. I don't know any of these people and in one night I have the risk if being molested on me.
"I'll have Chuck set up a place for you, somewhere safe from Gally," the Asian guy says. The last part of the sentence is laced with concern. Again. Noted!!

We are in what they call the Homestead with blankets and pillows, getting ready to sleep when I turn to Lizzy. "So," I say,"what's that Asian guys name." I give her a grin.
"Minho," she replies with a sigh.
"He seems to like you," I wiggle my eyebrows and laugh a little.
"Please," she gives a devilish smile,"what about you and Newt?" I turn a deep shade of crimson, groan, and roll over. Lizzy laughs and I drift off.
