The tour continues as we walk South, coming to the split in the wall that acted as a door to the beyond. "This," Alby says,"is the South exit." He turns toward us and throws his thumb over, directing to the exit. "Out there's The Maze, hope to God you don't end up out there." I step back, examining the tall gray slabs of stone. They're cracked all over and ivy blankets the stone. It looked ancient. That's when I notice a red light out of my peripheral vision. I turn but only in time to see a quick flash of metal and then see something skitter behind the ivy. I'm confused. So we're trapped in a giant maze. How haven't people found their way out? I decide not to ask questions, as Alby doesn't seem like the most answering guy. "Two years we've been tryin' to solve the damn thing. No luck. The shuckin' walls out there move every night. Damn near impossible to map the thing out." Wait what?!?! The walls move? How is that possible? Why do they move? Pain broke my thoughts. This is just too much to take in all at once. "Number one rule is the best to keep in mind, so ya shanks listen up. Nobody, ain't nobody, allowed in the Maze except for The Runners. Breakin that rule results in death. If ya ain't killed by Grievers we'll get ya ourselves." Grievers? Runners? What?!?! My sister pipes up.
"What are Grievers? And Runners? All of this is so confusing?"
"Runners are the ones who are allowed to go out in the maze. They do every day, explorin', lookin' for an exit. Minho's Keeper of them. You'll learn more about Keepers later on." At the mention of Minho's name the corner of her mouth pricks up. Is it possible that she likes him? She has to! It's too obvious. "As for Grievers? No way to describe em'. Newt'll show ya tomorrow mornin." It's my turn to smirk now. I grip the sides of his shirt and take a deep breath in, inhaling his warm scent. For some reason, at that moment, something clicked. I realized that I wanted to be a Runner. No, not wanted, needed. It felt right. Somehow I know my sister feels the same way. I glance at her and nods. Another flash of silver catches my eye. There's another rustle in the ivy. I point to the spot where the silver flash just appeared.
"What are those things?" I say.
"This is the last question until the tours over. Got that, shank?" I nod. "Those'r Beetle Blades. It's the way the Creators watch us."
"Creators?"
"What did I just say! No more questions!!" I simply nod. "That's all there really is. Lunch time anyway," he says, checking a black watch on his wrist.
"Okay," I say. Then someone calls for me. I turn. Gally.
"Hey I just wanna talk. Can you come over here for just a sec," he says. I tense. My sister comes up and puts a hand on my shoulder. I turn to her.
"I'll be fine," I say. I turn back and nod to Gally "What do ya want?" I hear my sister walk away. Before I know it he grabs me and pulls me into the Deadheads. How could I be so fucking stupid. We get deeper into the woods when he suddenly stops, slamming me against a tree. He pulls Newt's shirt forcibly over my head and begins to attack me. He aggressively kisses me, as if wanting to kill me and fuck me at the same time. I begin to cry. He kisses his way onto my chest when I finally regain my composure. I give him a swift kick in the groin and he keeps over.
"They're too hard for you to break," he says. I'm revolted. I can't say anything though. He pushes my hips against the tree and slams his into mine. I'm determined not to give up. I slap him and push him to the ground slamming a kick in his ribs. I grab the shirt and try to fix my twisted bra. It exposes almost everything. It's revealing just enough to know where his hands were the entire time. I can't though, it's too twisted. I scream. High and loud. It rips my throat to shreds. Suddenly I'm pushed to the ground and slammed over on my back. Gally attacks me yet again and I continue to scream. I kick at him, scratching his face. He doesn't give up. "Come on sweetheart, I know you love this," he says. I'm hit by another wave of disgust. Suddenly someone comes crashing through the trees and whips Gally off of me. He spins him around. I hear a fist meeting skin. Then another. Then another. Suddenly I see my sister. She helps me to my feet and sees my state. I'm shaking absolutely insanely. I tremble with fear, with loath, every negative emotion possible floods my blood. My sister fixes my bra. I do my best to thank her but I can't speak. I collapse on the ground and fall backward. Then, I see the attacker of my attacker. Newt. He's on top of Gally giving him punch after punch to the face. Gally kicks and flails, but he's nothing compared to Newt's strength. Suddenly, Alby and Minho come crashing through the trees. They see the scene and both grab one of Newt's arms, hauling him off Gally. I'm still on the ground, crying and shaking.
"GRAB HIM AND LET ME GO," Newt screams. They obey and he runs over to me. He lifts me in his arms and cradles me like I'm his child. "We've gotta get her to the infirmary. She's got cuts and scratches everywhere," he looks at Minho and Alby, who are now holding Gally back from getting himself killed by Newt. "Everywhere," he repeats. Alby nods.
"Go ahead," he says. Newt turns, still cradling me, and begins to walk through the trees. My sister and the boys trail behind. I can almost hear my sister in my head. He so likes her.
