Nick sat opposite the principle wondering why he had been called in.

"Nick your behaviour so far has been exemplary. No violent incidents, no bloodlust episodes." The principle recounted his report. "Because of this I have decided to allow you to go home for a week during half term."

Nick was elated. The school  didn't like to let pupils leave until they had been in training for at least two years. If leave was granted it was usually on the condition that they would be in an isolated environment supervised by approved vampires.

Most of the students were only allowed back on holidays because they were going home to some isolated mansion with strict parents.

Nicks Dad was tied up in Paris on business for the next month. So even if nick wanted to be with his vampire dad he couldn't. His human Mum was the only option and he had submitted the request without expecting it to be granted.

"Your exemplary record has convince me to make an exception. I wanted to tell you in person to make sure you understand the rules and expectations." The head explained. "Dracula is placing an immense amount of trust in you, that means strict repercussions for breaking that trust. If you feel there is even the chance you might slip up it is best that you stay here."

Nick chose his next words carefully. "Finding out I'm a vampire has been an upheaval, I think returning home for, even a short time, would greatly help me adjust to my new life."

The head seemed satisfied by this answer. "Good. Now Dracula will be monitoring you. If you need anything like blood, you have the number to call. And of course don't tell you mother."

"Can I bring Charlie?" Nick asked. Blood bags usually went with their vampires but nicks home was not a secure environment.

"Oh we insist you take you blood bag. Cant have you sneaking out every time you need to feed."

And so Nick called his mum and told her the good news, that he would be able to come home for the holidays. He also asked if his roommate could stay with them and she agreed.

It all felt very surreal, he didn't know what to feel. He was getting out of the school, but he would have to come back. He was returning to the real world, but he was bringing a blood slave. He was free, but would be watched and have to keep secrets.

Nick decided to take the win and told Charlie the happy news.

They stuck close together on the journey home, holding hands for most of it, Charlie fell asleep on nicks shoulder while they were sitting next to each other on the train.

Nick mum gave him a big hug when she met them at the station. "Welcome home Nicky I've missed you. And this must be Charlie."

Charlie was unprepared for the hug she gave him, and teared up as Sarah's arms wrapped around him.

Nick wanted to make the most of the week, he insisted on taking Charlie places. To the cinema, bowling, the beach, a carnival. Nick payed for everything and gave Charlie a wallet full of money at the start of the week.

"Nick I cant take your money" Charlie protested.

"Its my dads money." Nick father had given him an account with an obscene amount when nick became a vampire, with access to much more promised when he turned 18. It was the least this evil society could give back to the people they hurt.

Nick was also overjoyed to see nelly again and she took a shine to Charlie immediately. The three of them would go for walks every day and would all lye on nicks bed late at night.

On the fourth day Sarah and nick were alone in the kitchen. "Charlie seems like a lovely boy. You seem much more yourself around him." She said.

"Do I?"

"You do." Sarah gave nick the look mums gave when they knew something.

"What?"

"Is there anything going on between you two?" she asked. "Your very.....close."

"No nothing like that."

"Honey you sleep in the same bed."

"He gets nightmares and I like spooning." Nick blurted out then shrugged defensively.

"Its fine if you like boys. I hope I always made that clear." She was his mother, she knew him, she saw how he looked at Charlie. She had seen them hold hands. She saw how they hugged, cuddled, put their arms around each other. Charlie had told her he was gay and she knew when her son was in love.

"No mum. I cant." Nick didn't know how to explain. He couldn't tell her the truth. That he held Charlies life in his hands and so couldn't ask him out, because Charlie would agree either out of fear or Stockholm syndrome.

So nick decided to tell her part of the truth. "His ex treated him really badly. Its all very complicated and messed up."

Sarah nodded. "Well for what its worth I think he likes you just as much as you like him." Sarah had also seen the way Charlie looked at nick. "If you want my advice, life is usually complicated, but you should still go for the things that matter."
