"Charlie!" Tori called across the shop.

Nick had been allowed to go back home to his mum for the weekend and had of course taken Charlie with him. The two of them had separated briefly in the shop and that was when Tori saw him.

"Oh my god thank goodness your ok!" Tori exclaimed, rushing over and hugging him tightly.

Charlie winced as she touched the bruises ben had inflicted that still hadn't healed. Tori could also feel how skinny Charlie was, and see the half healed cuts on his neck from where the fangs had punctured.

"I cant talk to you." Charlie panicked pushing Tori away.  During 'training' blood bags had been told there was the possibility they might accompany their vampires out into the world. If they saw someone they knew they mustn't make contact or both of them would be killed. His only chance to save Tori was to push her away.

Tori saw his fear, she saw the marks of abuse. And then she saw Charlie run to an older larger boy who grabbed him and rushed him away. When their parents had kicked Charlie out for being gay he had disappeared, Tori had always feared someone had taken advantage of him.

Nick got a call from Dracula an hour later when he was at home, telling him to come in with his blood bag. Nick seriously thought about running but they were watching him, even if he could somehow grab Tori, his mum and Charlie and run, they would find him.

So nick found himself in a nondescript office opposite a vampire wearing a law enforcement uniform.

"Your blood bags sister called the police because she suspected her brother was being abused." The vampire informed them. "This was flagged by our intelligence networks and we brought her in."

Charlie flinched like he was going to say something, ask if Tori was ok. But the vampire gave him a look, blood bags were only allowed to speak when asked a direct question.

"This sort of thing happen occasionally. Standard procedure is to have a vampire  compel her to forget the encounter. But you have the right to request her 'disappearance', which would be prudent given she now lives in the same town as your human mother. More encounters are likely."

"No." Nick quickly said.

"We could include a block in the compulsion. So if she sees Charlie again she wouldn't recognise him. But that's tricky, and memory wipes are already difficult to begin with."

"What if you don't wipe her or kill her?" Nick suggested. "Just let me talk to her, put her mind at rest."

"Fine." The vampire shrugged. As he left the vampire muttered something about pets.

Nick new that within vampire society there was a minority who were fond of their blood bags, treating them like pets rather than food. Nick appeared to fit into this category and vampires had stopped asking when he was going to kill his human. Instead vampires would randomly stroke Charlie and call him cute, like how you might stroke a cat while talking to their owner. The treatment made Nick sick to his stomach, but it was better than being treated as a blood bag.

The police vampire was annoyed that Charlie was one of these pets because it made his life harder. He would have preferred to terminate Charlie and Tori and be done with it. Now he was going to have to put indefinite surveillance on her.

Tori was waiting in a nondescript room when the door opened and Charlie rushed in and nick hovered in the doorway. Charlie ran up and hugged Tori.

"Charlie. Are you ok." Tori asked, trying to examine him while shooting daggers at nick.

"I'm fine." Charlie lied. Brushing off her attempts to pull up his sleeves.

"You stay back!" Tori growled as Nick entered the room.

"No tori it wasn't him." Charlie said.

"Hi I'm nick." Nick broke the silence by extending his hand. Tori looked at him suspiciously refusing to shake. Nick realised she wasn't going to believe Charlie while this massive stranger was looming over him.

"Il give you two some time." Nick said leaving the room.

Tori sat Charlie down and whispered, still worried they were being overheard.

"Charlie, if this nick guy is threatening you."

"He's not." Charlie insisted.

"Your covered in bruises."

"That was from this guy who took me off the streets; after Mum and Dad kicked me out. Nick beat the guy half to death when he rescued me."

"Did they arrest the guy who did this to you."

"They cant find him." Charlie lied.

"Dose nick make you do things? In return for saving you." Tori asked, worried that trauma had warped Charlies mind to see abuse as love.

"No. He's sweet and amazing and protective and he would never hurt me." 'on purpose' Charlie added in his head thinking back to the times nick had fed on him and his vampire side had briefly taken over.

"Are you living with him? Is he 18?"

"No we are in school. Nick got me into this private school far away, his family is paying." Charlie explained.

"why did you run away from me earlier?" she asked.

"I thought Mum and dad would be with you. I didn't want to get you into trouble." Charlie said.

"I moved out as soon as I turned 18, haven't spoken to them since."

Charlie and Tori spoke for almost an hour, Charlie told her lies to protect her. He told her he was safe and happy. But not all of it was lies, all the good things he said about nick were true.
