After joining the rugby team nick had discovered that vampire rugby and human rugby were pretty much the same. It was muddy, violent and involved a lot of aggression. Nick was a lot stronger but so was everyone else in the scrum so it didn't make a difference. Apart from injury's magically healing he could have been back at Turnham.
Occasionally there was some blood or hot tempers that brought out the players vampire side. Their fangs would come out and they would hiss at each other but rarely actually rip each other apart.
During a break in rugby practice Harry came up to Nick and asked "Why do we never see your blood bag?" He gestured to the side lines where a row of humans stood holding water and towels, their sleeves rolled up ready for players to snack on them.
Nick just shrugged and tried to avoid the question. Harry jogged off to feed and a different player called Sai came over to talk to nick.
"Its messed up isn't it?" Sai nodded to the humans. "We could pay people for their blood. Instead Dracula gives us slaves."
"Why?" Nick asked.
"We cant criticise the bad things Dracula dose if we have done monstrous things ourselves." Sai explained. "Its a ingenious method of indoctrination, they make it our fault. like the Stanford prison experiment they set up the conditions for abuse, but were the ones who chose to do it."
"I hadn't thought of it that way." Nick said, keeping his expression and tone neutral. He was still working out the rules of this new world. Who he could be honest with, what he should and shouldn't say.
It seemed that Dracula had surveillance in the main areas but not in private rooms or out out in the wilderness. Internet traffic was monitored but not restricted. He had heard students say a lot of openly negative things about Dracula, even to teachers in lessons. Free speech and independent thought was tolerated to an extent. But there was an underlying fear because several people disappeared each year. Where and why was classified, so nobody knew if they had been promoted or killed.
Nick was playing it safe, talking as little as possible so he didn't reveal his bottomless hatred for this secret society.
But people were starting to ask questions about his blood bag. Why he didn't bring it places, why he only drank blood from bottles you could get in the cafeteria. On multiple occasions he had be offered a drink from someone else blood bag, which he politely declined.
Whispers were starting that he beat his property. Visible injury was the only explanation for why nick hadn't let anyone see Charlie. Nick hadn't even let any of his classmates into his apartment.
When nick went home after rugby practice he told Charlie that the roomers were getting worse.
"There's a way you can stop them asking questions." Charlie explained. "Take me somewhere."
"Are you sure your ok with going out there? Being around vampires?" Nick asked, last time they had gone out Ben had attacked Charlie.
"I've been cooped up here forever. I need to see faces that aren't yours, no offence."
