Walk

The cool evening air was invigorating as they took a walk down one of the paths overlooking the coast of the island. Charlie kept a tight grip on nicks arm, Nick pushed away all the traumatic implications of it and just enjoyed the moment. Charlie seemed to be doing the same taking deep breaths of the fresh sea air. Nick found himself smiling at the moment of happiness that flickered across Charlies face.

"Thankyou." Whispered Charlie. The fact he worked up the courage to say it out loud showed how much it meant to him.

Then they rounded a corner to find two female vampires sitting on a bench sharing a bottle of wine and a blood bag. One of the girls looked up from the arm they were feeding on and nodded to nick as casually as if she had been drinking a Capri sun.

No matter how many times he saw vampires casually feeding on humans nick couldn't get used to the sight. He hurried on before the girls asked him if he wanted to join.

As they walked away Nick noticed Charlie had gone still and silent, even more so than usual. He was moving robotically, his head down, he was afraid. He had been reminded of his purpose as a blood bag.

"That's not why I brought you out here." Nick was upset that he even had to say it.

Charlie relaxed a little, seeing the feeding had killed the mood and tainted the memory but they could still enjoy the rest of the walk. Charlie even let go of nicks arm to pick a flower alongside the path.

Nicks gaze was caught by the sun setting over the sea, he took his eyes of Charlie for a second and someone pounced. He heard Charlie gasp and turned to see ben holding him by the throat. Ben sniffed at Charlie, as if deciding whether to take one last bite before or after he killed him.

"Let him go!" Nick took a step forward but Ben tightened his grip, making it clear Charlie would be dead before Nick reached them.

"Why are you so attached to it? Its just a human. And a hand-me down human at that." Ben laughed. "Well I suppose its your first and you haven't killed it yet."

"Let him go." Nick growled. He felt his fangs slide out and his eyes turn red. Strength flooded his muscles. Information flooded his senses. He could hear Charlies heartbeat, he could see the tiny hairs on the back of bens hand. Nick felt like he could reach Ben in half a second and rip him in half, and from what he had learned about vampires he probably could.

Nick saw a flicker of fear cross bens face. Ben had come here with the intent to kill Charlie. But he hadn't expected nick actually get this angry.

Nick could see Ben weighing the risk in his mind. Disposing of a lose end verses getting into a brawl with someone stronger than him, a young vampire that couldn't control their bloodlust and looked angry enough to kill.

Ben decided disposing of Charlie was not worth risking his life over.

"Fine if your going to get all worked up about it." Ben chuckled and released Charlie.

Charlie stumbled over to nick and buried his face into nicks chest. Nick wrapped one of his arms protectively round Charlie, supporting him as his knees buckled and he started crying silently. Ben disappeared into the darkness and nick picked up Charlie and carried him home as fast as he could.
