Chapter 3
Raoul and Rednai Boudreaux were twin brothers who had helped build her home alongside other villagers, both were grandsons of the old women who had first shown her kindness, she was the female elder of the tribe, healthy as a horse but she looked so fragile you couldn’t help but think of her as defenseless. Nanai was fierce when crossed and would fight strongly for something she believed in. Her opinions were well respected and relationships in the tribe were always approved by her before they could flourish. Nanai was a motherly figure to Rosa, every few weeks she would invite Rosa for herb tea and fresh guava. Rosa loved Nanai as if she was family, she remembered a younger Nanai forcing her young grandsons, cheeky, stubborn teenagers at the time to help in the building of Rosa's home, after many failed attempts at wooing Rosa, she had accepted them as close friends, now 6 years later they were as close as siblings, except brothers don’t ruthlessly flirt. She had instantly taken a liking to the boys, they were young and fun, always saying the cheesiest things in hopes of making Rosa fall for them, she had always laughed at their pitiful attempts, never taking them seriously, now the brothers were older, they had filled out and turned in to very attractive men. Rosa had always thought them attractive but had never felt any sexual feeling towards them, or for that matter to anyone, she liked to have friends but was to cautious to have an official relationship. Even now they continued to flirt, they knew it would never get them anywhere, but the easy banter between the three came naturally and they loved the relationship they shared. After their younger sister Ramaya had been born, the brothers had both matured greatly, their fun loving personalities remained intact however there was a new found seriousness behind their actions.Raoul seemed more affected, the jokes ad pranks he was notorious for ceased, his bother now the main cause of laughter between them. Rosa had come to understand the laws and rules of the tribes people. The reason the women of the tribes were protected was that, for some reason the birth of a female was exceptionally rare, they often died in their first years of life as well as their mothers regularly miscarrying when the baby was female. No one knew why this happened, Rosa had spent months trying to work it out, using all the knowledge she had, to form some sort of idea as to what was causing the low mortality rates of females. She had considered everything from the environment to their diets, but had never found anything credible, when ever she approached the subject with the tribes people they had instantly shut down, their defenses going up and refusing to continue the conversations. She had always assumed the topic was a sore point in the tribe and refused to provoke the situation.
Stepping on to the camouflage balcony, Rosa took a step towards the open doorway, each time she had come the brothers had always come out to greet her, even before she set foot on their balcony, she had no idea how they knew when she came, but they always did. She took another step waiting for the sounds of the boys footsteps, often behind her trying to scare her. They didn’t disappoint, she just made out the brush of their feet on the balcony behind and to the left of her, she had no idea how she knew this she just did, stepping out of the way quickly, she spun around all within a second, to see the large bodies of Raoul and Rednai, both in a crouched position which she knew from experience meant that they were seconds from pouncing. Both men looked shocked that she had known they were there straightening their bodies up they peered at her with curiosity openly on their faces, Rosa blushed slightly, she didn’t know how she had known they were there either , her reaction to them had been even more surprising, the perfect spin she just did and looking down at herself the semi crouch she was now in was proof that her body was controlling her, she hadn’t even realized she had taken a defensive crouch against the men. She didn’t want their questions because she had no answers to give them. Quickly righting herself she beamed up at them hoping to distract them from their current thoughts. The confused looks on their faces showed they were surprised by her slightly manic grin, Without thought she launched herself towards them, wrapping her small arms around each of their waists, her arms didn’t even reach to their backs, they were just too big, solid walls of mass muscle. Looking up at their faces, the slight smiles they both shared and their grey twinkling eyes swirling in amusement as they gazed down at her. 'ive missed you guys' she stated in a whisper, pulling back she abruptly slapped each of their naked torso's 'why haven’t you been to see me, its been 4 weeks, i mean at least a small visit! its nice to know your thought of sometimes' she shot at them sarcastically. Raoul looked slightly guilty but mainly amused, while Rednai was still rubbing at the stinging spot of red on his chest where Rosa had slapped him. 'Rosa mi unico amor, you know I ain't one for all that kinky shit, but for you querida i'd make an exception, I have to say ive missed your barrage of verbal assaults, all that fiery passion really gets me going, if you ever need an outlet you know im always available. But for now can we take this inside, someone might get the wrong idea.' his words a husky drawl accompanied by a sly wink attempted to seduce her. She felt the smile tugging at her mouth, she knew he was deflecting from answering the question. Her frown and slight hurt at them not speaking to her for weeks quickly diminishing. Rednai chose to answer here again, his face changing from the playful flirt to deadly seriousness in a milisecond. 'its Nanai' he stated 'shes been feeling down for a while now, none of us wanted to leave her, just recently shes been getting worse' his face showing his desperation 'Armand Jacques, the shaman you know him right?, he's been dropping by regularly, says its just old age catching up with her. It so hard to see her like this Rosa.' His voice betrayed the emotion he was feeling, his eyes slightly glassy, Rednai was always the joker, Nanai's illness was hitting him hard. Rosa glanced to Raoul, his face was expressionless, it could have been carved from stone, only his his eyes portrayed the emotion he was feeling, they were deep and sorrow filled. Rosa's throat wouldn’t work, her words not being able to form, she felt choked up and her heart thudded painfully, she loved Nanai, she was accepting and patient like a mother, always willing to help. Rosa just stepped forward and wrapped one arm around Rednai's waist while she stood on tiptoes to reach a hand up to Raoul's head, gripping the back of his neck, she bought his head down to the crook of her neck. Letting it rest there she just held the men, her closest men, the big strong men, she had shared a large part of her life with, the men who despised showing emotion or weakness, yet at this moment all of that was forgotten, they were young teenagers again sharing the distress of Nanai's illness. Raoul hated weakness the most he never admitted his feelings, always choosing to remain stoic and controlled, even now as she felt Rednai's, silent tears shake his body, the trembles vibrating through her. His chest pressed up against hers sent the trembles through her own body mixing with her own sobs, whilst Raoul, with his face still nestled in the crook of her neck, her hair open and flowing today masking the pain on his face, he wouldn’t show emotion even now his body stood still crouched over so that he was level with her, but no tears or sobs, just ragged breathing, slowly evening out.
