After being woken this morning at 6am with horrendous stomach cramps and not being able to fall back to sleep I reluctantly decided to get out of bed and make my way downstairs. As usual Dad was sat at the kitchen table reading his newspaper and drinking his morning cup of coffee, I don't know how he drinks the stuff, it's vile. I'm more of a tea person.
"Morning Bree, you're up early."
"Yeah couldn't get back to sleep so thought I'd get up."
I made my way over to the kettle and flipped the switch, while I wait for it to boil I pull a mug from the cupboard added a tea bag and some sugar then grabbed the milk from the fridge. The kettle clicked signalling its boil so I added the hot water and milk.
Just as I grabbed my tea another pain shot right across my abdomen causing me to almost spill the tea I was holding all over the place. I quickly put the mug back down, spilling it in the process and grabbed hold of the side and my stomach crouching over in pain. Out the corner of my eye I noticed my dad jump out of his seat and run over crouching to my level placing a hand on my back.
"You ok?"
"Ergh I got like really bad pains in my stomach, like it seriously hurts," I reply as I breathe deeply trying to get rid of the unfamiliar pain shooting through my stomach.
"Has this happened before Bree?" He asks obviously concerned as he helps me over to the kitchen table and sits me down.
"No," I whine.
"Ok I know this is going to sound inappropriate coming from your Dad but as your Mum isn't here anymore I have to ask, do you think this could be your period starting? You're 17 now Bree, it was bound to start sooner or later. Have you started, you know, bleeding?"
"Eww dad no, don't ask me things like that," I feel my cheek blush at the odd subject to be having a conversation about with my Dad. "But no I'm not bleeding."
As embarrassing as it may be he is right. I'm 17 years old and still haven't started my period, all my friends, including my best friend McKenna all got theirs when they were like 14 or 15 and then there was me, still flat chested and undeveloped with no signs of anything starting anytime soon, until now that is.
"You might be right though," I sigh giving into reality admitting to my Dad that this is what it might be happening to me, he quickly goes over to the cupboard then returns with a packet of pain killers handing them to me.
"Take some of these every four hours to keep the cramps away, you're going to need them."
"Thanks," I say blushing
"Right sweetie I've got to get going to work, if you don't feel like school today then you don't have to go but I'll see you about 7," Dad said before kissing me on the forehead and grabbing his backpack heading out the front door.
Dad works on the railway tracks repairing any damage from accidents or just faulty tracks in general, it's a risky job but he's been doing it for years, so I trust he's safe. As for Mum she died when I was younger, Cancer. The weird thing is it's like I knew she was ill before she even did, in the time leading up to her announcement of having the deadly disease I noticed she smelt different, almost like a rotting smell. I'd mentioned it a couple times but my parents just brushed it off. Then a couple weeks later we found out about the Cancer. I miss her sometimes, like times like these, when a daughter would need a mother to talk to her about the changes going on in my body.
I took a couple of the pain killers with a glass of water then made my way upstairs to get dressed. I decided on a simple dark outfit today consisting of black jeans, a navy blue tank top and dark wash denim jacket. After getting dressed I text my best friend McKenna and told her I was ready.
