They continued on through the snow in silence. Even Chongyun didn't make a sound. All that remained was the howling of the wind and the crunch of snow under their feet.
Saya knew her legs were moving and she knew that they were moving. She knew that Gisei was gone and she knew that she didn't have time to mourn. She knew all of this, but all she felt was emptiness.
She had poured everything left in her into digging the grave, now she felt like there was nothing left inside of her. It wouldn't matter if she painted on a smile or tried to fill herself up again. She felt so broken, like everything was falling through the cracks of the shattered mess she had become.
"Saya?" Ajax whispered, he placed a hand on her shoulder. "We could stop now. There's a cavern over there where we can set up camp. I- You-" Ajax sighed and rubbed his hand across his face. "It would probably be best if we stopped now."
Saya looked up at the sky. The stars had begun to creep up and the sun was setting behind the mountains. Saya usually would have found it beautiful, but today all she felt was the cold crawling in. Has it really already been an entire day? This morning seems only seconds away.
She nodded slowly and quietly stumbled into the hidden cavern. It was more cramped than their last spot, so they all had to lay down besides each other. Ajax kept his distance as well as he could, trying to give Saya space, but Chongyun was a different story.
The small boy lay curled up beside Saya and reached out to Saya with one small hand. She took it and Chongyun decided this was an invitation to come closer. He rested his head on her stomach and quickly drifted off to sleep.
Saya's eyes stayed focused on the boy and a silent vow was written in her heart.
She was broken, but so was the rest of the world. She was broken, but she would still do what she could to fix the brokenness. She had to. She would hold it all together until she could at least save Chongyun. She was broken, but she could hold on.
