Steve saw the relief wash over Leonora's face as she realised those ten words no longer controlled her.
She looked so weak and exhausted, desperately fighting off a whole range of emotions, but unable to keep them at bay now as she cried happy tears. Steve joined in, laughing as they kissed, tasting the salt off each others lips as they wept.
Bucky had watched from the side as Steve gave him a nod. His eyes mirroring similar emotions, as Steve knew he realised in that moment that it was possible, and he too had a chance.
They had suspected Leonora's de-programming wouldn't take as long as Bucky's, due to the length of time it had been in place, but the fact the Wakandans had been able to do this at all was miraculous. Steve could never repay their kindness.
He rocked Leonora in his arms as she cried. He had never seen her cry so much in the whole time he'd known her. He felt his heart reach out, as if trying to connect to hers through their ribcages that were pressed together now.
Shuri and the others vacated the room to give them a moment.
"I can't believe it Steve." Leonora whispered hoarsely whilst he stroked her hair.
He had thought he was so close to losing her, now here he was with her even more his than before.
"I know Sweetheart. Me neither. I'm so happy and proud of you." He murmurs as he feels his chest swell with pride.
"I can't believe it...I'm free. It doesn't feel real." She repeats, as if thinking she was in a dream she'd wake up from and face reality again at any moment.
"We should celebrate." She says eagerly as she sits more upright.
Steve laughs and gently coaxes her back down, her eyes suddenly feeling heavy again.
"Nora, you've just had a grand mal seizure. You need to take it steady. Shuri says you're going to be feeling the effects of this physically and mentally for a while. We have our whole lives for that." He gingerly chides as she pouts up at him, her face growing more weary by the second.
He knows she has him wrapped around her finger, so he needs to keep his resolve for this.
Shuri had specifically said that, despite not being able to be activated anymore, her flashbacks may be stronger now that her brain had new pathways, trying to reconnect the dots of the past.
