~ Chapter twenty four ~
~ 𓆙 ~
Leonora knew something was wrong when she couldn't find Bucky in his room, or at their usual spot by the river this morning. She'd also stopped by his old hut, asking the local children if they'd seen him.
Perhaps she had finally pushed him over the edge with her panic attack last night. Maybe he needed a break from her. She wouldn't blame him. He seemed to want her in a way she couldn't fully give herself, and for that she felt so guilty.
After taking Shuri a cup of coffee and sensing her avoidance in answering her questions, she had decided to go for a run through the forest.
She was having one of those restless days where she needed to continue to move her body, propelling her forward through her grief and depression. She was afraid if she stood still for even a moment, everything would catch up with her.
So she got changed and headed out, feet pounding the earth below her as she ran as fast as she could. She passed locals who marvelled at her speed, eyes gaping at the strength. She didn't stop though, she kept going. Sprinting until her lungs began to burn and she was at least five miles away from the palace.
With each thud of her shoes, she felt her heart crack, willing it desperately to stay together, even tenuously. She wanted to live today. Today was not a day she wanted to die. But her mind and body were at war with one another and it was getting hard to think or breathe.
Suddenly she is in a beautiful clearing, and she halts her movements as she takes in the scenery. There are beautiful flower beds and a pond of sorts as she sees a sign attached to an ancient tree. She walks over, trying to read it through ragged breaths.
A place of memoriam.
For those who fought valiantly in the Battle of Wakanda before the Snap.
We thank you for your bravery and selflessness at defending our country.Leonora stumbles backwards, realising this must've been the spot Steve once spoke about, where they had battled Thanos as he retrieved the last stone from Steve's teammate. She remembers him speaking about watching Bucky turn to dust before his eyes and how difficult that'd been for him.
The sign is several years old now and it is worn slightly at the edges. She wishes she could've held Steve then and told him it was going to be okay, that he wasn't as alone as he felt.
But she couldn't, because she was the enemy.
And she can't now, because he's gone.
