My mouth went dry when I saw Narcissa Malfoy standing in my room—or was it her room?

I wasn't sure if the ex couple had split things 50/50. Didn't know if she considered this her place—if she considered me to be a guest in her house.

I'd only been the manor for two days—still not having unpacked. My trunk and things all sat in a corner of the room...waiting.

Waiting for permanence of some sort, perhaps.

The mess of discarded clothing next to it had me slightly embarrassed—though she hadn't eyed it. She'd just been standing in my room looking out a window until I'd walked in.

I hadn't seen her since that day on the elevator.

She was a beautiful woman who had the sort of talent where she could be both terrifying and lovely. As if enhancing this effect, her eyes were winged with black eyeliner, accompanied by a bold red lip.

Her eyes were trained on me—sharp and unyielding.

It felt as though I was heading off a serpent who hadn't yet presented her fangs.

Nothing in her face revealed the thoughts swimming behind those eyes.

She was confident and fierce in her stance—her arms crossed—but still elegant.

Neither Lucius nor Draco were home. It seemed as though she planned this ambush.

It was difficult to hide how my blood ran cold.

Still, I cleared my throat and forced the words out.

"Hello Mrs. Malfoy."

"It's Ms. Black now, Y/N," she corrected, with a small smile as she lifted a brow.

Why did my name sound like a threat when she spoke it?

"Right. Sorry," I said to her in an apologetic tone.

Her looked at me once over then turned back around to the window to look out of it, as she said, "I wanted to say thank you for taking care of my son..."

She paused, turning her head ever so slightly to the side so I could see her nose.

"And, also, my ex husband, apparently."

My mouth dropped open as my face went white.

"I-I.. um—" I stuttered and she turned to me with a amused smile.

"I'm only teasing you, Ms. Y/L/N.. Truly," she said with humor.

I stood still, feeling as though I was in a trap of some sort.

"I wanted to meet the woman whom he so desperately begged me to let him save—even though he was half dead himself. He never did tell me who he needed to go back for but... then I saw the way he looked at you on that elevator and well... I knew it had been you."

She was cool and calm as she explained.

I kept my mouth shut as my heart beat in my ears.

She didn't look or sound angry—which made the whole thing that much more terrifying.

She considered me a few moments.

"Do you know, dear girl, why Lucius and I separated?" she asked.

"No," I said with a frown, feeling like I was going to be sick but still keeping my voice even. I wanted nothing more than to flee the room.

She looked towards the bathroom and exhaled a breath as though she was...relieved?

"He was true to his word then," she mused, more to herself, then turned her attention back to me.
