You almost dropped the cup of tea that you were going to sip when the news reached your ear. Your eyes widened, not believing the words that were tumbling down your best friend's lips. Jean looked so nonchalant as he shrugged his shoulders, enjoying his coffee as if he didn't just tell his two friends about the divorce.

His divorce. The beautiful marriage he had with the one and only Mikasa Ackerman, the same woman that he married to even in the previous life.

It was just like any other night inside the Kirstein residence. All of the windows were closed, followed by withdrawn curtains. The fireplace lit up to warm the chilling temperature of the winter weather. But tonight, it wasn't enough to comfort him the second his eyes met with the obsidian orbs that he used to love staring at.

The ones that usually looked back at him with tenderness, had turned to guilt.

He was waiting for her to come home, wanting nothing but to surprise her since he was away for two weeks, handling a tricky client. Jean came home in hope to be back in his old routine, slowly trying to erase the longing that was residing in his mind for far too long after he got the vision of his old life with you. It was wrong for him, thus the reason he decided to have a staycation date with his wife, cooking her favourite food for dinner.

But it had run cold now as he shared silence with her. Four hours had passed since the time she was supposed to be home, the wine he prepared and the comfy setup in the living room was forgotten completely. With the way she cast her gaze away, he knew it would be untouch.

Because what he saw a few minutes prior — it was all true, his eyes didn't try to deceive him.

Jean really saw her with someone, emerald orbs looking so bright as she laughed at something the man said. He tried not to judge the situation too quickly, thinking that it must have been just one of her kind colleagues who drove her home. But then, he just had to lean in and close the gap between them, smashing his lips with hers, capturing what he knew was supposed to be his.

"I am sorry, Jean."

And what hurt the most was the fact that he was alright with it somehow.

His head was empty, not knowing what to say since he had seen this coming. Ever since he saw the brunette on your special day, one way or another, someone would try to take her away from him. And he couldn't even be angry because he knew how much in love they were in the previous lifetime, how they wanted nothing but to be together.

So, it would be selfish for him to try keeping her beside him, right?

"It's alright." Especially when he knew she wouldn't be able to love him the same as how she loved Eren. "I understand, Mikasa." Just like, in the back of his mind, he realised he wouldn't be able to love her the same as how he loved you.

Jean Kirstein was a mishmash of two souls colliding in one body. He remembered everything, knowing some promises were already broken. That was why, he just wanted to focus on this life, believing the past wouldn't be able to define who he was. And Mikasa met him halfway all those years before, she was always there for him.

But when he touched her face for the last time, cradling one cheek with his hand, he knew she was moving on. Even in the previous life, he was only a transit, someone who accompanied her until one day, her love would be able to find his way to her. And it was time, this was the time for them to part ways. Who was he to stop them from being together?
