Draco had just let his emotions overwhelm him and for the first time he was going to confide in his mother. To confide in his mother his forbidden love, to confide in his mother how he had cowardly tortured her, to confide in her also, all that he had done to fight against his feelings since that moment... since that day...
On his knees on the floor, and streams of tears running down his diaphanous cheeks, Draco clenched his fists hard against the cold tile floor of the room. His mother knelt in turn, before taking him tenderly in her arms. The sense of security that the Slytherin felt at that moment, he wished Hermione could feel it too.
Narcissa had a sweet vanilla scent, and her arms were wrapped as lovingly and tenderly as possible around her son on the verge of annihilation. The latter could only think of one thing; to give Hermione back her smile. To give her back that irresistible smile that he had secretly loved for so many years. But for now, he had to set his heart free and trust his mother. He had probably never really taken the time to realize the deep and true love that she had for him. So today, he would return the favor, and recreate the bond that had been broken since his childhood.
Slowly, he let go of his mother's embrace and shyly wiped away the tears that he had let fall. He went to sit on the floor, leaning against the foot of the large four-poster bed, his elbows resting on his knees. Narcissa sat at the end of the bed, all ears.
- I think I was under the influence of a powerful potion that day..." Draco began with a barely detectable smile.
- We don't choose who we love my darling...
- Yet I would have liked to choose. To avoid finding myself in this kind of situation. To tell you the truth," he continued after a short pause, "if you think about it, it's not a "kind" of situation. I'm the only person in the world to whom this has ever happened and will ever happen...
- I don't think so, Draco. Don't you remember this?
To the Slytherin's surprise, his mother held out her hand, in which was a brooch he'd had time to forget.
- But I thought...
- Your father never got rid of it as I let him think. I kept it carefully until today, hoping that one day I could give it back to you, and I think that day has come, my son. Remember that you are not alone and the fight you are waging is not the easiest one, but others may have gone before you.
- Aunt Andromeda...
- That's right. She too had to fight for the love of her life. And today I want you to remember that her fight was not in vain, and that it gives you the strength you need to face this obstacle that stands between you and this girl.
Draco looked at the silver object as he twirled it between his fingers. The sword and the pair of wings that clothed it remained intact despite all the years that had passed, and the blue stone glowed with the same light as the first time he had seen it. Nostalgic, he told his mother how it all began...

It was raining. I don't know how long it had been since I had started to dislike the snow. But that day, there was an outing to Hogsmeade. And I was sure I wouldn't see Potter around. So I was quite pleased. Crabbe and Goyle were with me as always. I would have liked to be alone for once and enjoy a nice walk in the little woods. But I had to resign myself to having them accompany me. As we walked through the thin, snow-covered trees, I spotted a face I knew all too well. I barely realized that Hermione Granger was there, probably alone, when another figure disturbed my vision. It was Ron Weasley. I didn't really know why, but I had an overwhelming urge to disturb them, and I took a confident step in their direction. Crabbe and Goyle were finally proving useful. I needed to assert my superiority over Weasley. That's how I saw it. But in the end, Hermione had made her point.
