I lowered myself onto the armchair next to Luca, clasping his hand tightly in mine. My heart raced with fear as I tried to will him back to consciousness. The moments seemed to drag on for hours, and the anticipation was unbearable.
But the thought of escape consumed my mind. We were trapped in this house, guarded by armed men at every turn. It felt like an impenetrable fortress, and our chances of escaping seemed very slim.
Suddenly, Luca jolted awake and jumped to his feet. "Yasenia? Where are we?"
"Thank goodness you're okay!" I breathed a sigh of relief.
Luca's eyes darted around the room until he noticed Diego's man. He flew into a rage and was about to launch himself at the man when the man warned, "Attento adesso. Non farmi usare questo, (careful now. Don't make me use this)" he waved his gun in my direction.
I saw Luca struggling to control himself, and his anger boiled inside him like a seething storm. But he took a step back toward me, fists clenched so hard that his knuckles turned white.
I wracked my brain for a plan, but knew we couldn't risk making a move on the guard. I felt the desperation creeping in. There was no way we could take the man down without risking our lives, but I had to do something before it was too late.
The tension was suffocating, each second stretching out painfully. And then, as if fate had intervened, the guard's phone rang loudly, shattering the silence.
As the guard turned towards the window to answer the call, Luca seized his opportunity. In a flash, he grabbed a nearby vase and smashed it over the guard's head. The sound of shattering ceramic echoed through the room as the guard stumbled backwards, dazed but not out.
"Get his gun!" I shouted, hoping Luca would act quickly.
But the guard was ready for a fight, and as Luca reached for the gun, a struggle ensued. My heart raced with fear, not knowing what would happen next.
I watched in disbelief as the two of them squared off, struggling to come up with a way to help Luca. My hand involuntarily covered my mouth to stifle a scream as the man pinned Luca down, choking him. My mind went blank and before I knew it, I pulled out my pocket knife from my sleeve and repeatedly stabbed the man from behind with all my might, forcing him to release Luca and collapse.
A wave of shock washed over me as I stared at my trembling hands, blood-soaked and stained. Horror consumed me as the realization of what I had just done sank in. I had stabbed a man to death...
"Hey! Look at me! You did the right thing, you saved us," Luca reassured me, his hands cradling my face.
I wanted to believe him, but the weight of my guilt was crushing me.
Burying the creeping remorse, I knew I had to remain focused and get us out of this nightmarish situation. I sprinted over to the lifeless body and paused, staring at it for a moment. The feel of the cold, hard blade in my hand lingered as if it were still there, piercing through him. Shaking my head, I tried to shake away those haunting thoughts, but they lingered. Turning the man over, I rummaged through his pockets, searching for his phone. Pulling it out, I dialed Alessandro's number and anxiously waited for him to answer.
