Task at Hand

The whole day seemed to blur together for Michael. As his mind kept playing back to either during the night when he took all his siblings to sleep with him or their mum for taking a picture of them all on his bed sleeping. He prayed to whoever out there that his siblings would never see that photo or if they did see it, it would be when they were old and wrinkly.

"Earth to Mike, whatcha thinkin' 'bout this time?" Joshua looked over to Michael with curiosity written all over his face, the two were heading to their last class, which was thankfully study hall.

"Nothin' much...just something I gotta do when I get home." Michael bullshitted with a half-truth if he was being completely honest, he almost forgot about the task everyone had to do later in the evening.

"Is it your old man who's gonna make you do more chores or something? Getting groceries again, if you want, I can swing by the market with Jeremy." Joshua offered as he caught the Afton siblings buying groceries whenever his mom nagged him to help out getting food for later in the week.

"No, it's nothing like that, it's something else but, I got to be home for it, so I can't hang out later today," Michael reassured as he entered the classroom, with Joshua trailing behind him.

"Well, if you say so...also, has your old man always been that terrifying at driving?" Joshua shuddered as the past car ride still replayed in his mind.

"Well, he has his moments...that still take me off guard..." Michael selectively said, taking a seat at one of the empty desks. He didn't know much about Dr. Bill as he had only seen him only twice, with that being the first meeting and then the other day.

"Well, if you say so dude, anyway, can you help me out with this problem? I keep getting 79 for this answer." Joshua sighed, took out his work, and handed the slip of paper to Michael.

"... Are you serious?" Michael glanced at the paper before back at Joshua with a stony face.

"I am dude, please I need your guidance!" Joshua begged as he gave Michael his best sad puppy look, which looked rather pathetic.

"The answer is Greenland, this is Geography, Josh." Michael turned to his friend with a dry look.

"Is it? I could've sworn it was math." Joshua gave the paper another look, as his face morphed into the realization that Michael was right about the work being Geography. "Well thanks, Mike, you're the man."

"It's really nothing, Josh." Michael gave him a dry, concerned look, before realizing how dumb he and his friends could be at times.

Like that one time when Michael was taking a test in chemistry when he managed to be the first one done with the test, taking in the sweet time to silently lord over being the first one done. It wasn't until the last five minutes of class that he realized that there was a back page to the test. Ever since that day, he always made sure to thoroughly check either tests or quizzes so that he got everything answered before relaxing for the rest of the class period; never again did he want to answer in a hurry before class ended.

"Want a red vine man?" Joshua pulled out the red candy from his backpack, taking a piece for himself as he held the box toward Michael.

"Hm-Oh sure." Michael broke from his thoughts, taking the candy, before taking out his homework from the previous classes.

"Ayo Mike, are you still up for tomorrow? Heading to the arcade this time, you know, the one with the good soft pretzels." Joshua smiled as he bit into the red candy, correcting his mistake on his geography work.

"I think so, I'm not really sure right now since things at home have been busy of late." Michael offered, as he wouldn't know if there was going to be another task after the one they had to do was completed.
