aleah was sitting on her bed tapping away texting jason, her best guy friend. they were talking about how aleah should ask how her crush, but she never did. she loved talking to jason about her problems because he always knew what to say to her. even if it hurt.aleah was currently fourteen, an oncoming freshman. she was hoping her first year of high school would be the best. but so far, it wasn't. right now, lia liked this kid, connor, but he isn't her type, as jason would always tell her. she knew she should give up but she would always find him cute.
soon aleah sister, ashleigha, barged in her room telling her to get ready for dinner. aleah rolled her eyes and told Jason she'd call him later and he simply said good bye. as she walked downstairs all she thought about was connor, who she desperately wanted to talk to, but couldn't or else shed embarrass herself.
aleah sat at the dark wooden table as her mother passed a plate of mashed potatoes and linguini alfredo. aleah absolutely despised Alfredo, so when the ceramic plate was sitting nearly a foot away she intentionally gagged and bit her plump lips. her mom never makes disgusting alfredo unless she had news. and usually the news is bad news so she had no clue what was up.
she thought she could just push the thought away until her mom told her and ashleigha to sit down and listen. aleah was worrying so much because she had no idea what's to come.
"girls," her mother began looking at them. "as you know your father has left us a while back, and I've been working really hard to keep us functioning." she took a long pause. "you'll be staying with your father for a few weeks in france. and Aleah you'll be taken out of school for a few months to take a babysitting class or part time job there."
normally aleah would be thrilled, but she was just starting to get really close to jason, and she didn't want to leave connor, despite the fact that he never talked to her.
aleah's sister was well over pregnant. as her sister was only 17, it was a travesty, so aleah participated to help in with her soon to be nephew. but she had to take classes? extra schooling? it's bad enough she has five days a week but now she had to have six. not only extra schooling but living with her father. her father was a rude, strict man. always eat your veggies, no tv or phones after eight-o'clock, brush your teeth after dinner, no going to friends houses. this would be pure hell.
after dinner al quickly facetimed Jason to tell him the horrible news she had. as she waited for the facetime to answer, listening to the ringtone, she tapped her long black nails against the wood and glass bedside table she had. al always got acrylics and black nail polish, maybe red if she was daring enough. The titter-tatter of her fake nails were the only thing filling the room other than the annoying ringing of her phone.
"al, what's wrong?" jason asked, aleah didn't even realize he picked up. she just sighed and looked at him. she didn't want to leave him here for months. they were each other's only friends who they actually liked and cared about.
"how fast can you get here?" jason wasn't only aleahs best friend, but he also lived down the street. he was always there for everything and even though they only known each other for a year, they were like brother and sister.
"5 minutes." he said before hanging up. within minutes there was a quiet knock on my window. considering it was almost eight o'clock at night, her mom would flip if she found out that he's here. but aleah ( ally ) didn't care. yes ally was her nickname. same with al. "what's wrong al?" he said, barely above a whisper.
"I'm moving to France for a few weeks..." she said quietly, looking at her fingers. she couldn't believe that she wouldn't be just a few houses from her best friend, but continents away. she started tearing up and wiped the warm, salty liquid from her eyes. jason looked down at her and held her closely and protectively.
"shh sh al stop crying it's okay. it'll be okay. you're not leaving forever..." Jason said, trying to convince himself. "we can facetime and skype and text and write and do everything. al it's okay." ally wanted to believe it'd be okay, but she knew deep down everything would fall apart. and little did she know, it'll be worse than she thinks.
