"It really is unnecessary, Devyn," Miren assured her friend as she reclined on the plush sofa in Devyn's office sipping on a glass of celebratory wine.
"But I insist. You have more than earned it." Devyn had intended to host a banquet to welcome Miren as the new CEO of Viant, but Miren had been appalled by the idea. "Besides, I've never known you to turn down a party."
Miren released a chuckle at Devyn's statement. "That was when I was a lot younger, Devyn. I'm seventy-seven, wait seventy-six, no, seventy-eight...?" The woman's brows crinkled as she attempted to count just how many years she had existed.
"Your age is showing, I guess," Devyn teased with a sigh. Devyn was obviously lying as Miren looked absolutely incredible for her age. There were a few wrinkles showing around her eyes and a few silver streaks highlighted her otherwise still-vibrant red hair, but one would have placed Miren to be at least thirty years her junior. The brown-haired leaned into the back of the sofa facing opposite Miren and turned his face to the side to look at the woman from the corner of his vision. "I suppose we are too old for-"
"Oh, whatever, throw the party," Miren said with a wave of her hand. "You were going to anyways whether I wanted you to or not."
"Thank you for your spoken confirmation," Devyn thanked Miren with a playful smirk. Silence lapsed between the two friends as Devyn and Miren reclined in luxury with premium wine and whiskey. "Say," Miren began, her brows crinkling when she looked around the wide office. "Where is Denzyl? He's been gone for a while."
Devyn took a sip from his glass before answering, "He said there was something he needed to check. A report came back on something he was looking into."
"Mm," Miren sounded in response before setting her wine glass on the table stationed between the two sofas. "Well, I hate to leave you alone, but I'm afraid there is a lot of work I need to do thanks to a certain someone." Devyn chuckled lightly at Miren's jab while the woman stood to her feet and gathered her suit coat from the coat stand at the office door. "Good night, Devyn. I'll see you tomorrow," Miren bid the brown-haired before opening the door and exiting the room.
"Good night, Miren," Devyn bid in return before the door closed behind the woman. Now alone in his office, Devyn released a breath before activating the holoscreen above the coffee table. Displayed on the newsline on the holoscreen was "Devyn Vaumyr inherits entirety of Wil Kossen's assets and property". Sick of seeing the trial and news about the situation, Devyn deactivated the hologram before pouring himself another glass of whiskey.
The human's cheeks began to glow red when he began his third cup of the strong liquor. It had been an hour since Miren had left, and the sun had set a while prior to Devyn being alone. Devyn's eyes drooped as he felt the alcohol slowly taking over his senses. He had not meant to drink that much, but seeing the trial and his inheritance of Wil's everything being displayed everywhere, Devyn had entered a rather solemn mood, and the whiskey was just too available to him at the moment. He also did not wish to practice self-constraint in that particular hour, so before long, half the bottle of whiskey had been drunk and Devyn was passed out on the sofa dead asleep.
Hours passed, and the stars became veiled in blue as the sun rose once more. Warm light seeped into the office, and a pounding headache welcomed the CEO back into the land of the living. Wincing, Devyn rolled onto his back only to find an arm beneath his head. Slowly opening his eyes, Devyn turned to the side to see a sleeping demon beside him. Denzyl had crawled onto the couch next to Devyn after coming into the office a few hours before to find the human fast asleep curled up in a tight ball. Rolling back onto his side and scooching all the way into the back of the sofa, Devyn pulled the demon, who was about to fall off the couch, closer to him. No matter how expensive and large the sofa was, it was no small feat to fit two fully grown men without one always being in danger of falling off.
